Horizontal Drilling
Horizontal drilling may be a debatable issue for mineral rights, as drillers can drill into neighboring mineral deposits, yet it is one of the most renowned technologies in the petroleum industry.
4.1 Horizontal Drilling
Horizontal drilling is a commonly used technology because drilling at an angle other than vertically can stimulate reservoirs and obtain information that cannot be done by drilling vertically. Horizontal drilling can increase the contact between the reservoir and the wellbore. As displayed in Fig. 8.5, the wells are drilled vertically until a depth that is above the shale oil reservoir is reached. This depth is usually 1000–3000 m below the surface [12]. Once this calculated depth is reached, the well begins to turn at an angle that is steadily increased until the well becomes parallel with the reservoir. Once the well is parallel with the reservoir, it is drilled until the desired length is reached.
