Circumcision was a sign of God's covenant to His Chosen people that the Promised Messiah would come from their lineage.
God would not instruct people to do something that is harmful to them physically.

When babies are born, it is a traumatic experience having one's head squeezed thru a space that is only 10 cm in diameter.
Getting circumcised at the age of 8 days old, is probably much less traumatic than at an older age.
