Domperidone is primarily used as an anti-nausea medication. However, the drug — branded as Motilium — consequentially ups levels of prolactin, the hormone which encourages the production of milk, effectively tricking the body into making milk. But the patient leaflet for Motilium itself warns breastfeeding mothers that its 'best not to take' it while nursing a baby due to the potential safety risks. 'Small amounts have been detected in breastmilk,' it reads.
'Motilium may cause unwanted side effects affecting the heart in a breastfed baby. 'Motilium should be used during breast feeding only if your physician considers this clearly necessary.'
