A massive fire broke out at Manila’s historical Central Post Office late on Sunday night and lasted over seven hours, before it was brought under control. The building dates back to 1926 and is considered a national historical landmark.

Fact Check: NOT French library that caught fire during violent protests, this clip is from Philippines

One viral tweet read, "Marseille library on fire, the French police chief said ‘these are not riots for police, it's war’. if this is not jihad, what is it, They will burn down your knowledge and education and livelihood. They have done this before and will do it till they establish Sharia."

India Today found that the video is not from France but from the Philippines. The building engulfed in flames was the Manila Central Post Office.

OUR PROBE

We found several news reports about a library being vandalised in Marseille, France.

In the city centre of Marseille, a library was vandalised, according to local officials. A CNN report from July 1 also said that the Alcazar library in Marseille was vandalized the night before.

We looked at photos and the Google Street View of the library and immediately, a few things stood out. The building looked very different from the burning structure in the viral video.

At the same time, unlike the viral video, the Alcazar library was not located right beside a water body. We checked Google Maps and found that while the library was located not too far away from the coast, it did not sit right next to it. Next, we reverse-searched keyframes from the viral video on Yandex. This led us to the official YouTube channel of Al Jazeera English, which contained a similar video, titled: “Major fire engulfs historical Manila post office building”.

Following this, a keyword search led us to several videos of the burning Manila Central Post Office building shared by the South China Morning Post, the Guardian, Sky News and the Times Of India in May 2023.

We noticed several similarities between these and the viral video, including the semi-circular facade, the pillars, and the fact that the building was located right next to a water body — the post office building is located along the banks of the Pasig River in the Ermita district of Manila.
