Not as far-fetched as it may seem. The Ron Paul experience showed us that running on an ideological platform would not get as much traction…the real "change" candidate needed visibility and panache…something Ron Paul lacked. Simply downplay the radical views and re-package the language ("trade deals" vs "free trade", for example) and essentially Trump can hold the same positions…remember that the good doctor had more support from active military personnel than all the other candidates combined.

While the press attacked Paul to destroy him, they sat back and allowed Trump to gain traction. Had Trump spoken like Ron Paul (end the Fed) they probably would've attacked and he might not be president today.

"Self-identified" vs. accepting the precepts of libertarianism without the ideological packaging.
