Johnny Depp wears a medical boot and walks with the help of a crutch in Manchester as he continues to recover from 'painful' ankle injury amid his tour

Johnny Depp was seen wearing a medical boot and walking with the aid of crutches on Wednesday as he left his hotel in Manchester as he continued to recover weeks after sustaining a 'painful' ankle injury.

The Hollywood star, 60, took things slowly as he relied on the help of the walking aid to carefully make his way to his tour bus.

Johnny is currently on tour with his band Hollywood Vampires, with the supergroup on the UK leg with upcoming performances in Scarborough, Swansea, Manchester and London.

Not letting his injury get in the way, Johnny looked in good spirits as he made his way out of his hotel and towards the bus, with the rocker carrying a red cup in his hand.

Cutting a cool figure, the Pirates Of The Caribbean star donned a distressed brown leather jacket which he teamed with a blue plaid shirt and a blue and red stripe slouchy hat.

Finishing off his look, he added black trousers, blue-tinted sunglasses and white and green trainers, with his other foot enclosed in the medical boot.

Pope Francis’s new top theological advisor has attempted to reassure voices in the United States and elsewhere who’ve questioned his adherence to Catholic teaching and tradition, vowing that he’s not a “Soros spy infiltrated in the Church.”

“I am not a Freemason, nor an ally of the New World Order, nor a Soros spy infiltrated in the Church. Those are pure fantasies,” said Archbishop Víctor Manuel Fernández, an Argentine theologian tapped by the pontiff July 1 as the new prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, traditionally the Vatican’s doctrinal watchdog agency.

Kids, ‘drugs, sex toys,’ dead man in South Boston apartment

‘Sickening’ Officials call for ramped-up inspections of public housing projects

Four children living in squalid conditions while being hidden from first responders were found in an apartment filled with “alcohol, drugs, sex toys” and a dead man, according to an incident report and outraged officials.

“This is sickening,” said At-Large City Councilor Michael Flaherty. “I was informed by people at the scene that there were drugs, alcohol, sex toys all around the apartment as well as a dead body on the floor.”

That fire department report, obtained by the Herald and confirmed by police response, states that a BFD crew was sent to Old Colony Avenue Saturday morning for a call that a man had gone into cardiac arrest and required medical attention. That address is the Mary Ellen McCormack Housing complex run by the city.

However, according to the incident report, firefighters found more than just a routine medical emergency.

“The apartment was in extremely unsanitary conditions. Approximately 6 adults, who appeared to be males, were seen in the apartment,” they wrote, saying they subsequently found “four children in the back bedroom being hidden by an adult male from first responders.”

According to the incident report the children ranged from ages 5 to 10.

“All of the adult parties were being uncooperative and did not provide helpful information. All adults present denied having children inside the apartment,” they wrote.

Fire crews say they filed a “51A form with the appropriate state agency.”

A 51A form is available for download from the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families and is titled “Report of Child(ren) Alleged to be Suffering from Abuse or Neglect.”

A spokesperson for DCF could not be reached to comment on the disposition of the children due to the Juneteenth federal holiday, though the agency does not typically comment on their work.

The fire crews, according to the incident report, performed CPR on the person in cardiac arrest, who apparently died. The Boston Police Department is investigating. A fire department spokesman confirmed a call came in for that address.

“At about 11:11 AM, on Saturday, June 17th, officers responded to the area of 381 Old Colony Avenue for a death investigation. District Detectives handling, not suspicious, no further information,” a BPD spokesperson told the Herald.

It is unclear whether the children were relatives of the people the fire department described as “appearing to be male” or if they lived in the apartment.

Flaherty, Public Safety chairman on the council, told the Herald Monday night the dead body found on the floor was “from an apparent overdose” and that “a man wearing a wig claiming to be the father” of the kids was found in a back bedroom.

Multiple sources tell the Herald some of the adults were dressed as women when first responders arrived at the scene.

State Sen. Nick Collins, a South Boston Democrat, praised the police, firefighters and EMTs who rushed to help.

“Our first responders should be commended for following through and fulfilling their duty as mandatory reporters,” Collins said, citing how they are legally bound to report children in potential danger. “No child should be exposed to what these children were allegedly exposed to.”

Council President Ed Flynn, also a Southie pol, ripped the “inhumane and horrific” discovery at a Boston Housing Authority (BHA) unit.

“This underscores the need for oversight into BHA inspections and eviction practices, security efforts in developments and protocols to ensure children are safe in every BHA apartment.”

No charges or identities of the occupants of the public housing unit have been provided to the Herald as of Tuesday morning.

️СNN, citing the US Department of Defense, reports that Russian Su-35S fighters intercepted three American MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance UAVs over northeast Syria.

“Contrary to established norms and protocols, Russian aircraft dropped several parachute bombs in front of the drones , forcing our drones to perform evasive maneuvers,” said Air Force Lieutenant General Alex Grinkevich. “In addition, one Russian pilot turned on the afterburner in front of the MQ-9, thereby reducing the operator’s ability to safely fly the UAV.”

The US Department of Defense publishes footage of the incident, which shows a close flight of the Su-35S and the release of luminous SAB-250-200 aerial bombs along the course of American drones.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/02/the-guardian-view-on-el-salvadors-crackdown-a-short-term-high-cost-fix

The Guardian view on El Salvador’s crime crackdown: a short-term, high cost fix

President Nayib Bukele’s hardline campaign against gangs has won admirers at home and abroad. Look closer and its flaws are glaring

Jailing 2% of your adult citizens turns out to be a surprisingly popular move, both at home and abroad. In El Salvador, the president, Nayib Bukele, has sent almost 70,000 people to prison in an “iron fist” crackdown on gangs, under a “state of exception” he imposed last March and has yet to lift.

Despite the suspension of basic liberties, due process and other human rights infringements, it is fast becoming a model for other nearby countries in the region. Honduras has launched a similar crackdown, after the gang-related massacre of 46 female prisoners. Other governments are considering it. In Guatemala, people have held pro-Bukele marches. “Copy it, as simple as that,” a mayor in Ecuador remarked of El Salvador’s tactics after a bomb attack in her city.

No wonder politicians want to emulate it: Mr Bukele and his crackdown have approval ratings of about 80% to 90%. Not everyone trusts those figures, given his tight grip on the country, but no one disputes the widespread support for his policy. The homicide rate, which spiked to a staggering 107 per 100,000 people in 2015, making El Salvador one of the most dangerous countries on earth, has fallen to just 7.8 per 100,000. Even long-term critics acknowledge that extortion appears to have fallen sharply and that many in communities which lived in terror are enjoying the freedom to live their lives unmenaced. Yet others, many of them innocent of any crime, have paid a high price for a campaign that has trampled over basic rights: at least 153 people have died.

Some may consider that a price worth paying. But even focusing purely on results, the story is more complicated than it appears. Critics point out that the homicide rate had fallen steadily since 2015 – with most of the decline coming long before Mr Bukele rose to power in 2019. They say that the president held behind-the-scenes negotiations with two key criminal organisations, the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gang, and believe that the spike in violence in early 2022 which prompted the state of exception came because the gangs felt that the government had reneged on agreements.

They also say the fall in crime is unsustainable – with good reason. Previous hardline drives in the region have ended badly, followed by surges in offending. They do nothing to tackle underlying causes such as poverty and discrimination. They breed resentment and enable the recruitment and hardening of those not entrenched in gangs. Many of the criminal organisations that now terrorise parts of Latin America were born in prisons.

As one critic observes, the real success story is not of the defeat of gangs, but the perpetuation of Mr Bukele’s power. This is a man who dubbed himself “the coolest dictator in the world” in response to criticism. In February 2020, he marched soldiers into parliament to demand security funding. After he gained a supermajority in parliament the following year, it fired the attorney general and five members of the supreme court’s constitutional chamber.

It is assumed that the popularity of his crackdown will sweep him back into power next year, even though multiple experts say that would violate the country’s constitution. What worries opponents, scholars, lawyers and civil society most is what he may do after that, with renewed authority. “Bukelismo” should not be admired, or emulated.

Biden to send thousands of cluster bombs to Ukraine despite them being against US law and banned in 120 countries - a year after Jen Psaki said using them 'would potentially be a war crime'

The White House has since December been weighing up providing cluster munitions to Ukraine to help them in their war against the Russian invasion

The weapons are known to cause grievous injury to civilians, especially children: they are banned in more than 100 countries, but not the U.S. and Ukraine

Five days into the war Biden's then-press secretary Jen Psaki responded to reports of Russia using cluster munitions and accused them of war crimes

CIA experiments, Mormon ravers and reformed racists: the untold history of MDMA

It was in 1975, when Carl Resnikoff and his girlfriend, Judith Gipson, took a bucolic ferry ride to Sausalito, a city located on the north end of Golden Gate Bridge, that a revolution in youth culture, music, emotion and imagination would take place. It was on that ride that the two undergraduates took capsules filled with MDMA powder for the very first time. Resnikoff, a biophysics major at Berkeley, had synthesized the drug himself. As the boat cut through the water of the San Francisco Bay, Gipson began to feel “a floating sense of euphoria … like some guy could come walking up to us asking for help and his guts are spilling out, and we’d be grooving on how beautiful it was.’”

cariye was a woman enslaved during warfare. This remained the formal definition of the term in the Islamic world. The rights of the enslaved woman was regulated within Islamic law. The enslavement of women was permitted only during warfare of a war deemed "just"; that is, a war against non-Muslims.

When the Crimean slave trade was closed after the Russian conquest of the Crimea in 1783 (and the Barbary slave trade in the early 19th-century), the cariye slave trade underwent yet another transformation. From this point on, a majority of the cariye were Circassians from Caucasus, with a minor part coming from the white slave trade. While the Circassians were normally Muslim, the ban against the enslavement of Muslims was overlooked in their case, and their original Muslim status was an "open secret".

Theodosia remained a minor village for much of the next nine hundred years. It was at times part of the sphere of influence of the Khazars (excavations have revealed Khazar artifacts dating back to the 9th century) and of the Byzantine Empire. Like the rest of Crimea, this place (village) fell under the domination of the Kipchaks and was conquered by the Mongols in the 1230s.

'Competence and Experience': U.S. Jewish Groups Thrilled by Biden's Cabinet Picks

Having Jewish men and women in prominent government positions is so standard that it’s barely even a talking point

NEW YORK – The fact that some of President-elect Joe Biden’s top cabinet picks are Jewish should be a source of pride for the community, especially because such appointments aren’t considered remarkable anymore, say American Jewish leaders.

“These people are being chosen because they’re incredibly competent, because they’re incredibly talented, because they’re incredibly experienced,” Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt told Haaretz in a phone interview.

Those nominees include Janet Yellen, who’s set to become the first woman to hold the position of treasury secretary; Alejandro Mayorkas, son of a Cuban Jewish father and Romanian Jewish mother, who will head the Department of Homeland Security; and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the stepson of a Holocaust survivor whose stories shaped his worldview and subsequently his policy decisions, including in the Middle East. All of the nominations are subject to Senate confirmation.

Biden also chose Jewish D.C. veteran Ron Klain, who worked with the then-vice president in the Obama administration, as his White House chief of staff.

“We should all take a measure of pride in the fact that their Jewish identity is tertiary relative to how the world sees them, even if their Jewish identity is primary for how they see the world,” Greenblatt said. He added that the diversity of the group represents the diversity of the American Jewish community at large.

Having Jewish people in prominent positions has become so “normal” that it “hardly matters,” the American Jewish Committee’s chief policy and political affairs officer, Jason Isaacson, told Haaretz. “It’s a testament to the glory of America, of America’s integration of immigrants, of America’s diversity and pluralism,” he said.

“These principles that we have all fought for, for centuries, we are now seeing in 2021 are true, are valid,” he added.
