NBC ‘spreading disinfo’ on Ukraine talks – Moscow

An NBC News report claiming that a group of former US officials have been in “secret talks”with Moscow is not accurate, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on Thursday.

“Fake [news]” and “disinformation spread by Western media,” Zakharova wrote on Telegram, next to a crossed-out bulletin summarizing the NBC story.

According to the US outlet, a group of former American national security officials have been conducting “track two” negotiations – with the White House’s knowledge but not on its instructions – with “prominent Russiansbelieved to be close to the Kremlin” for the past several months.

Moreover, at least one former US official has traveled to Russia “for discussions involving the Ukraine war,” according to two of NBC’s sources. The network cited two current and four former US officials,all anonymously.

NBC named four of the Americans engaging in so-called 'secret diplomacy' as former Pentagon official Mary Beth Long and three Council of Foreign Relations (CFR) officials: Richard Haass, Charles Kupchan and Thomas Graham. The latter weresaid to have metwith Russian Foreign MinisterSergey Lavrovin New York “for several hours” back in April.

In addition to the alleged meeting with Lavrov, the Americans supposedly had talks with “academics, leaders from major think tanks or research institutes and others in the Russian foreign policy sphere perceived as having President Vladimir Putin’s ear or being in regular touch with Kremlin decision-makers.”

Lavrov was in New York on April 24-25, to chair a meeting of the UN Security Council. His published schedule does not mention an encounter with Graham, Haas and Kupchan.

The latter two authored an essay titled ‘The West Needs a New Strategy in Ukraine’, which NBC described as having been published in Foreign Affairs “around the same time” as their supposed meeting with Lavrov. However, its actual publication date was April 13 almosttwo weeksbefore the Russian foreignminister traveled to New York.

Washington has officially said it would not discuss Ukraine without the direct involvement of Ukrainians. Kiev insists the only “peace proposal” it is willing to discuss is a list of demands by President Vladimir Zelensky amounting to Russian capitulation. Moscow has rejected Zelensky’s demands as delusional and said it had no intention of talking with him, only with those in the Westwho are pulling his strings.

(Does any anon here think the CFR is negotiating for peace with Russia, when their whole leftists goal is to plunder and steal Russia’s assets? )

Biden officials ordered to limit contact with social media firms

The US government was acting like an “Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth,” a federal judge said

A federal judge in Louisiana has restricted some Biden administration officials from contacting social media platforms on matters of content moderation, in a move that critics say could hinder efforts to combat the spread of misinformation ahead of the 2024 US presidential election.

In a 155-page ruling released on Tuesday, Terry Doughty – a judge appointed by former US President Donald Trump – moved to limit government oversight to social media firms’ content “containing protected free speech.”

The judgement comes in response to a lawsuit brought by Republican attorneys general in Louisiana and Missouri, who had claimed that federal government officials had conspired to silence conservative viewpoints online, under a veil of curtailing misinformation.

“Evidence produced thus far depicts an almost dystopian scenario,” Doughty said. He added that efforts to stage-manage debate online, particularly relating to the Covid-19 pandemic, had led to the United States government assuming “a role similar to an Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth.’”

The judge said, though, that government officials would still be able to request moderation by social media companies in criminal cases, and in instances where national security is threatened.

In his ruling, Doughty also referenced several exchanges between government officials and Big Tech – including one in which former White House director of digital strategy Rob Flaherty complained to Google that some YouTube content was “funneling” people towards vaccine falsehoods. Flaherty wrote in an email that it was a concern “shared at the highest (and I mean highest) levels” of the White House.

However,Nina Jankowicz, a specialist in the study of misinformation campaigns, said the ruling represented a “weaponization” of the federal court system. “It is an intentional and purposeful move todisrupt the work that needs to be done ahead of the 2024 election, and it’s really chilling,” she said, according to The Guardian on Thursday. The cool part is the judge said the gov agencies cannot contact social media on any matters related to this law suit until it’s done. So that could literally mean two plus or more years. That why the freaks are losing it.)

Jankowicz also noted that “nothing that the government has been doing is actually censorship” and that “it is a really dark moment for the United States that such a broad injunction would be granted.” (Hmm in the cpurt order, the gov communications to social media said to censure people!)

Others, including the US Senator from Missouri, Eric Schmitt, take a different view. Schmitt, who was one of the originators of the lawsuit, described the ruling as a “huge win for the first amendment and a blow to censorship.”

The White House said that the Justice Department was reviewing the ruling. It added that social media firms “have a critical responsibility to take account of the effects that their platforms are having on the American people.”
