The show of force (weapon) ended the assault. You have a right (in a few states) to stand your ground. You don't have a right to take shots at someone fleeing (unless you work for the state).
It was resolved to anyone who was paying attention at the time. The press didn't cover it or ridiculed it, so it just seeped into the memory hole.
