Revealed: How the Andrews government carried out secret polling to gauge public support for Victoria's vaccine passports
Documents released under Freedom of Information reveal how the Andrews government turned to a Labor-aligned research firm to gauge public support for vaccine passports and its COVID strategy.
New details have emerged about the secret polling the Andrews government sought out during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Australian revealed on Saturday the government turned to Labor-aligned QDOS Research to carry out polling on Victoria's vaccine rollout and COVID-19 strategy.
The surveys were designed to gauge support for vaccine passports and also test the public mood about moving from an elimination strategy to one of suppression.
QDOS Research used focus groups and online surveys to gather data and analysis from May to October 2021 when COVID-19 vaccines were at the centre of national debate.
The revelations come following The Australian gaining access to more than 130 pages of emails and documents through the Freedom of Information Act.
But about 350 pages of results QDOS Research gathered have not been publicly released after being marked "cabinet in confidence" by Premier Daniel Andrews' department.
The Department of Premier and Cabinet said some of the documents were exempt under the Act as "they were prepared for the purpose of cabinet's consideration".
"The QDOS research was crucial to ensuring the Victorian government could implement the best possible public health response to the Covid-19 pandemic," a spokesman said.
But shadow special minister of state David Davis said the survey results "should be there for the whole world to see", noting that "after all, taxpayers paid for it".
"Daniel Andrews has had Labor fellow travellers QDOS undertake his sensitive and secret vaccine surveys and now he wants to keep these special surveys secret," he said.
