Well, doing one of those in a B737 at 40K feet is a thrill. Of course that's in a simulator which is as real as it gets. Those maneuvers started being included in recurrent a few years before I retired. You don't get control of the aircraft until about 34K feet but surprisingly, it was not a real violent upset like you would think it would be. Aircraft shudders and then rolls over 90 degrees. You just go with it and get the airspeed out of the footer and continue the roll, let the airspeed stabilize because you can induce a secondary stall, control surfaces start to become more effective, level the wings and slowly pull the nose up. Right at Redline when all of this is happening. Nose comes up and judiciously start to apply power and recover. And of course there were the approach to landing and departure stalls. Aircraft responds much quicker because of the more dense air at lower altitudes. These maneuvers happen very quickly so you have to be on the money with it. Loved doing all that shit.
