Dementia Tied to Fluctuations in Blood Lipids Over Time

Fluctuations in total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in people 60 and older were tied to a higher risk of incident dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, a longitudinal study showed.

Over a median follow-up of 12.9 years, participants in the highest quintile of total cholesterol variability versus the lowest quintile had a 19% increased risk of incident Alzheimer's or related dementias (HR 1.19, 95% CI 1.04-1.36, P=0.011), reported Suzette Bielinski, PhD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and co-authors.

Those in the highest quintile of triglycerides variability had a 23% increased risk compared with the lowest quintile (HR 1.23, 95% CI 1.08-1.41, P=0.002), the researchers wrote in Neurologyopens in a new tab or window.

"Routine screenings for cholesterol and triglyceride levels are commonly done as part of standard medical care," Bielinski said in a statement. "Fluctuations in these results over time could potentially help us identify who is at greater risk for dementia, help us understand mechanisms for the development of dementia, and ultimately determine whether leveling out these fluctuations could play a role in reducing dementia risk."

Vascular risk factors, including hyperlipidemia, have been linked with dementia but most studies have measured them at a single point in time, Bielinski and colleagues noted. Research about cholesterol variation over time has not evaluated relationships between dementia and fluctuations in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides, they added.

The researchers studied 11,571 participants in the Rochester Epidemiology Projectopens in a new tab or window (REP), a medical records system that links researchers with data from community providers who care for residents of southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Participants were age 60 and older, did not have a prior diagnosis of Alzheimer's or dementia at the index date of Jan. 1, 2006, and had three or more lipid measurements including total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, or HDL-C in the 5 years before the index date.

Ireland Abortions Hit Record High: One Baby Killed for Every Seven Babies Born

Ireland has seen its highest number of abortions on record for 2022, with one abortion for every seven babies born.

Yesterday, the Department of Health in Ireland released its abortion statistics for 2022, which revealed there had been 8,156 abortions. This is the highest number of abortions since abortion was made legal in Ireland in 2018.

Due to a discrepancy in the 2021 abortion figures, which the Department of Health in Ireland blamed on COVID-19 and a cyber attack, only approximate numbers for the total number of abortions in Ireland in 2021 are available. Based on the approximate figure though, there were 6,700 abortions in Ireland in 2021, which means there was a 22% increase in abortions over a single year.

Pro Life Campaign spokesperson, EilĆs Mulroy, said that the latest figures showed that for every seven babies born, one was aborted.

ā€œIt shows how the Irish abortion rate has dramatically jumped, as the result of a government which has shown a complete lack of interest in providing women in unplanned pregnancies with real alternatives to abortion. Politiciansā€™ only focus now should be on reducing the numbers, not on making the abortion regime even more pervasive.ā€

ā€œEven the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, in recent days has spoken of his concern with the exploding abortion rate ā€¦ If Mr Varadkar is serious about seeing a decrease in the abortion rate, he urgently needs to focus on providing women in unplanned pregnancies with greater supports and alternatives to abortion. He must also engage with and listen to pro-life perspectives, instead of relying exclusively on abortion advocates in setting policy in this areaā€, she added.

Progressives tar and feather Rep. Ocasio-Cortez for endorsing Bidenā€™s 2nd term: ā€˜Massive disappointmentā€™

Progressive Twitter users blasted "Squad" member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., this week, after she endorsed President Joe Bidenā€™s re-election bid.

Leftists on the platform accused the lawmaker of selling out her progressive and anti-war values with her decision to support the second presidential term of the Democratic Party leader who recently just approved of providing controversial cluster bombs for Ukraineā€™s war effort.

Critics accused the Congresswoman of "maliciously" selling out working class voters with the endorsement.

Ocasio-Cortez officially endorsed Biden during the Thursday episode of "Pod Save America."

When asked by the host if she would endorse Biden in a Democrat primary field consisting of the current president, author Marianne Williamson, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the lawmaker claimed she would.

"I believe, given that field, yes," she said. She added praise for the 80-year-old Bidenā€™s presidential performance so far, saying, I think heā€™s done quite well, given the limitations that we have. I do think that there are ebbs and flows, as there are in any presidency."

"There are areas that I think were quite strong," she continued, noting "he came right out of the gate with the American Rescue Plan."

Lordā€™s Prayer opening may be ā€˜problematicā€™, says archbishop

The archbishop of York has suggested that opening words of the Lordā€™s Prayer, recited by Christians all over the world for 2,000 years, may be ā€œproblematicā€ because of their patriarchal association.

In his opening address to a meeting of the Church of Englandā€™s ruling body, the General Synod, Stephen Cottrell dwelt on the words ā€œOur Fatherā€, the start of the prayer based on Matthew 6:9ā€“13 and Luke 11:2ā€“4 in the New Testament.

ā€œI know the word ā€˜fatherā€™ is problematic for those whose experience of earthly fathers has been destructive and abusive, and for all of us who have laboured rather too much from an oppressively patriarchal grip on life,ā€ he said.

His comment ā€“ a brief aside in a speech that focused on the need for unity ā€“ will divide members of the C of E, a body whose differences on issues of sexuality, identity and equality have been highly visible for years.

After Cottrellā€™s speech, Canon Dr Chris Sugden, chair of the conservative Anglican Mainstream group, pointed out that in the Bible Jesus urged people to pray to ā€œour fatherā€.
