Not the time for Ukraine to join NATO – Munich Security Conference chair

Christoph Heusgen has claimed accepting Kiev would mean dragging the military bloc “directly” into a conflict with Russia

Ukraine cannot join NATO while its conflict with Russia continues, Munich Security Conference chairman Christoph Heusgen has argued. He added, however, that security guarantees should be created for Kiev, with the prospect of full membership further down the road.

In an interview with Germany’s Rheinische Post newspaper published on Monday, Heusgen claimed that “Ukraine must and will become a member of NATO – as soon as the conditions allow this.”

However, granting Kiev membership “in the current phase of the conflict” is out of the question, Heusgen stressed.

“That would drag the alliance directly in the war, because, according to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, collective defense would be triggered then,” the official explained.

He went on to express hope that during the NATO summit, that kicks off in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius on Tuesday, leaders of member states would send a clear signal that Ukraine belongs to the “NATO family,” as well as discuss conditions for Kiev’s future membership.

At the weekend, Britain’s Telegraph newspaper cited anonymous NATO officials as saying that Germany opposed offering Ukraine a clear roadmap or concrete guarantees of joining the US-led military bloc at the upcoming summit.

According to the newspaper, Berlin is concerned that Kiev would immediately invoke Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which declares that an attack on one is an attack on all, should it be admitted into the bloc.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated last month that the Ukrainian leadership was well aware that joining NATO is “out of the question” for as long as it is locked in conflict with Russia.

US President Joe Biden recently voiced similar concerns, suggesting that Ukraine’s immediate NATO membership would mean “war with Russia.”

Several media outlets have claimed in the run-up to the Vilnius summit that US, Germany, and France are attempting to devise security guarantees for Ukraine for the time being.

Ukraine formally applied to join NATO last autumn, with President Vladimir Zelensky since demanding an invitation or at least a clear membership timeline. The Ukrainian leader has reportedly even threatened to skip the Vilnius summit if he is not satisfied with what the bloc has to offer.

Russia has for years described NATO’s eastward expansion as a critical threat to its national security. Officials in Moscow, including President Vladimir Putin, have repeatedly listed Ukraine’s NATO aspirations as one of the factors that led to Russia’s military action against its neighbor.

(They are using this talking point, but they really is Ukraine will beg for money for the rest of time if allowed in. They all know it and secretly hate everything about Ukraine.)

Ukraine stepping up mercenary recruitment effort – Russian MOD

High battlefield losses have reportedly forced Kiev to look elsewhere after a reduction in hired guns from Europe

Ukrainian units formed from foreign mercenaries have suffered high battlefield casualties, forcing Kiev to change its approach to finding hired fighters, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Monday.

In a statement, the ministry alleged that the Ukrainian military commandviews foreign fighters as cannon fodder, sending them into the riskiest missions and placing them at the back of the line when it comes to the evacuation of injured troops. This has made recruiting fighters in European countries such as Poland much harder for Kiev, the assessment claimed.

Ukraine has consequently ramped up efforts to find candidates in other parts of the world, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, which stated that a recruitment drive is underway inArgentina, Brazil, Afghanistan, Iraq, and areas of Syriathat are “under American control.”

The reference to Syria likely concerns the predominantly Kurdish northeastern part of the country. The US supplied Kurdish militias with weapons, training and air support when they served as ground forces for the Washington-led coalition in the fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). The Pentagon also maintains a military base in eastern Syria, despite the objections of the government in Damascus.

The Russian Defense Ministry further claimed that Ukraine’s diplomatic missions in theUS and Canadaare actively hiring fighters with thehelp of the CIAand private military contractors under its influence.

Ukraine created the so-called International Legion for what it describes as foreign volunteers fighting for its cause. Moscow considers the fighters to be mercenaries and has repeatedly said that the regular laws of war do not apply to them. The Russian Defense Ministry’s assessment on Monday put the number of foreign mercenaries currently employed by Kiev at 2,029.

There are numerous accounts from foreign fighters describing the perils of joining the Ukrainian ranks, including mismanagement by military leaders, corruption with logistics, and the overwhelming risks of engaging Russian forces.

Russia reveals number of foreign fighters in Ukraine

Most mercenaries end up being used as “cannon fodder,” Moscow has said

Only 2,200 mercenaries remain in Ukraine of almost 12,000 that had flocked to Kiev’s cause since the conflict escalated, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.

Atotal of 11,675 foreign fighters from 84 countrieshave been recorded entering Ukrainian service since February 2022, Lt. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said during a daily briefing.

Poland accounted for the largest number of foreign combatants – more than 2,600 of them. The US and Canada furnished over 900 each, followed by Georgia (more than 800), the UK and Romania (over 700), Croatia (more than 300), France (over 200) as well as Syrian territories under Turkish control.

However, atotal of 4,845 foreign fighters diedin battle and another 4,801 fled Ukraine, leaving only 2,209 on active duty in the Ukrainian armed forces as of June 30, Konashenkov noted.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Kiev was intensifying efforts to recruit mercenaries in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, due to facing manpower shortages at home.

“The Kiev regime uses mercenaries mostly as cannon fodder for meat assaults,”Konashenkov said. “The Ukrainian command has no regard for their lives. Theonly choice they have is to flee Ukraine or die.”

He pointed to the fact that most of the mercenaries arrived early on in the conflict, in March and April of 2022, with the tempo of arrivals “decreasing sharply” after they took the first combat losses. A strike on the base of the ‘International Legion of Ukraine’ in Yavorov in early March 2022 killed up to 180 foreign fighters, with Moscow vowing “no mercy for mercenaries.”

Western veterans who went to Ukraine expecting to use their experiences from Afghanistan or Iraq have testified to media outlets that the current conflict is totally different, describing the incessant artillery as “just hell” and complaining that their life expectancy on the frontline is measured in hours.

“This is my third war I’ve fought in, and this is by far the worst one,” a former US marine told The Daily Beast last week.

US State dept has become ‘ministry of truth’ – Moscow

American media outlets are trying to make Russians rebel at Washington’s behest, the Foreign Intelligence Service has claimed

US authorities are urging the country’s media outlets to propagate falsehoods about Russia in a bid to undermine its stability, amid the ongoing stand-off between Moscow and the West, the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has claimed.

In a statement on Monday, the agency quoted its director, Sergey Naryshkin, who insisted that “theUS State Department … basically dictates to the American mediawhat exactly they should write and say,” adding that it “has finally turned into the ‘Ministry of Truth’.”

The comment was an apparent reference to the fictional ministry tasked with falsifying historical events in George Orwell’s world-renowned dystopian novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’.

The SVR, citing intelligence data, claimed that last month the department sent instructions to several major media holdings, including AT&T, Comcast Corporation, Graham Media Group, Nash Holdings, Newsweek Publishing and The New York Times Company, telling them to “reflect events in and around Russia in a distorted manner.”

According to the agency, these outlets were tasked with convincing Russian citizens that there was a need for a “forceful struggle against the authorities, up to an armed rebellion.”

They also wanted to “involve the population in protest actions” by “actively circulating falsehoods” about Russia’s purported weakness and its “inevitable defeat in the stand-off with the West,” the statement read.

To achieve this goal, Washington has told media organizations to focus on packaging certain narratives to young Russians, as well as hailing Russian opposition figures and other nationals engaged “in sabotage and terrorist actions” against Moscow as heroes, the agency claimed.

“There is nothing new in freedom of speech being trampled on in the West. It is unfortunate that the State Department, which used to be a sober-minded and rational agency … has turned into a stinking landfill of informational garbage,” the SVR added.

The statement comes after Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov predicted in April that the level of “external interference” into Russia’s domestic affairs would only grow amid the Ukraine conflict. He also suggested that the West would be interested in derailing Russia’s presidential elections, which are scheduled for March 2024.
