FYI, shadows can help. You use GIMP?
Here's a short tutorial:
Add your text in a layer.
Create a new layer, then move it below the text layer.
Select the text layer.
Right-click on the text layer, and select "Alpha to Selection".
Select the new layer.
Use menu item Select, Grow; in the dialog, enter the amount to grow it by, I generally use 5 pixels but if image is larger resolution, have gone up to 20.
Click the Bucket Fill tool.
Select the color of the shadow you want.
Click anywhere inside the selection (still on the new layer), and it'll fill the whole thing in.
Then use the Opacity slider to adjust the shadow to look best, against the background.
