California Assembly Blocks Legislation That Would Have Made Child Trafficking Punishable By Life in Prison

The California Assembly Committee on Public Safety has squashed a bill that would have increased the charges for human trafficking, despite it passing through the state’s Senate with bipartisan support.

On Tuesday, the California Assembly Public Safety Committee blocked the measure, prompting a victim to scream out “horrible” through sobs.

Fox News reports, “No Democrats on the committee voted for the bill. Only one Republican assemblyman — Assemblyman Tom Lackey — voted yes on the bill while the GOP vice chair of the committee, Assemblyman Juan Alanis, was out of the committee room at the time of the vote.”

The report added that “S.B. 14 was given reconsideration, meaning it could be taken up again by the California Assembly next year.”

The bill had been supported by Elizabeth Smart, whose kidnapping at age 14 made national headlines.

“This bill should be passed into law without hesitation. Too many victims fear coming forward and speaking out for fear of their traffickers repercussions,” Smart had said of the bill prior to Tuesday’s vote. “Too often we are restricted in our efforts to serve justice, and far too often victims and survivors never even glimpse justice. Trafficking is heinous and brutal – a crime thankfully many of us will never experience. This is a small step we can take to begin protecting our survivors and procure some small modicum of justice.”

The bill had passed through the senate in May.

Chicago suburb starts disbursing $10 million reparations package to black residents

A Chicago suburb has become the first city in the nation to begin disbursing reparations payments to black residents over discrimination and limited access to housing, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Approximately 140 residents in Evanston, Illinois, will receive $25,000 from the city by the end of the year, according to the outlet.

In 2019, the city of roughly 75,000 residents approved a $10 million reparations package to be distributed over 10 years. So far, the city has already disbursed reparations payments to sixteen qualified residents, the Evanston Round Table reported.

Individuals must have been at least 18 years old and resided in the city between 1919 and 1969 to qualify for the payments.

The city is providing reparations in cash or vouchers, which are supposed to come from marijuana and real-estate transfer taxes.

However, the Evanston Round Table noted that the marijuana sales tax revenue slowed after the opening of a second dispensary in the city was delayed. Another location is scheduled to open in September, which will help cover the reparations program.

City officials anticipate that the entire program will be funded, in part, due to Evanston's graduated real estate transfer tax. Evanston's assistant to the city manager, Tasheik Kerr, stated that $1,188,000 has already been collected to cover reparations disbursements.

Justin Hansford, the head of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center at Howard University, said he sees the city's reparations plan as "a test run for the whole country."

Despite being the first city in the country to distribute funds, some are still unsatisfied with the payments.

Resident and civil rights activist Bennett Johnson accused the city's 1969 cutoff year of being "totally arbitrary" despite the city passing a fair-housing law at that time.

Johnson argued that black residents were still being "discriminated" against and "hurt," the Evanston Round Table reported. He also contended that the payments were not enough.

"I believe that [Evanston is] doing the same thing that we've done in the past, downgrading the ability of Black people to do things for themselves," Johnson stated. "We could realize that if we don't let Black people control this, we [are] still doing the same thing that we've done in the past."

Conversely, Ramona Burton, one of the reparations recipients, stated that she believes the payment is "a good start."

"It's better than a blank," she added.

Crown Resorts to pay $450 million fine for money laundering breach, Federal Court orders

Crown Resorts has been slapped with Australia's third-largest corporate fine, but will be allowed to pay its penalty in interest-free instalments over two years.

On Tuesday, the Federal Court ordered the gambling giant to pay $450 million for breaches of money laundering laws.

Crown has admitted its casinos in Melbourne and Perth did not have proper systems to monitor "high risk" gamblers and junket tours, some of whom had links to organised crime syndicates.

The company was found to have committed at least 546 breaches of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act, between 2016 and 2022.

Among its failings, Crown did not carry out suitable due diligence on 505 high-risk players, who gambled tens of billions in VIP rooms. Some were later found to be major criminal figures.

Crown's fine ranks behind payments made by Westpac ($1.3 billion) and the Commonwealth Bank ($700 million) for breaches of anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing laws.

Interest-free $450m payment on 'lower end', judge says

In May, Crown and the financial crime regulator said they had struck a deal for Crown to pay a $450 million fine over two years. However, the plan was subject to approval by the Federal Court.

On Monday, Justice Michael Lee raised concerns with the proposal when lawyers for Crown and the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) fronted up to the Federal Court in Sydney.

He said allowing Crown to defer most of its payment effectively gave the company a discount of about $50 million because of the reduced net present value of the fine.

Despite that, Justice Lee eventually agreed to the $450 million penalty over two years with no interest incurred.

Isabel Maxwell: Israel’s “Back Door” Into Silicon Valley

By moving in “the same circles as her father” and vowing to “work only on things involving Israel,” Isabel Maxwell became a pivotal liaison for the entry of Israeli intelligence-linked tech firms into Silicon Valley with the help of Microsoft’s two co-founders, Paul Allen and Bill Gates.

In 1992, Israel’s government created the Yozma Program at the urging of Chief Scientist of Israel’s Ministry of Industry and Trade – Yigal Erlich – as Erlich moved to leave that position. The Yozma Program aimed to “incentivize venture investment” by creating state-linked venture capital funds, which later spawned a myriad of Israeli hi-tech start ups with merging them with major, foreign technology companies. According to Erlich’s website, he had lobbied Israel’s government to launch Yozma because he had “identified a market failure and a huge need in Israel to establish for the first time a professionally-managed venture capital industry that will fund the exponential growth of high tech ventures coming out of Israel.” He then “convinced the Israeli government to allocate $100 million for his venture capital vision.”

Erlich’s vision would also result in the fusion of Israel’s hi-tech sector, which he helped to create, with Israel’s intelligence apparatus, with numerous Israeli hi-tech conglomerates created with funding from the Yozma program and its successors doubling as tools of Israeli espionage. Notably, not long before Erlich convinced Israel to place $100 million into this program, Israeli intelligence, thanks largely to the work of infamous spymaster Rafi Eitan, had learned the benefits of placing backdoors for their intelligence services into commercial software through the theft and subversion of the PROMIS software. As noted in Part I of this series, Israel’s bugged version of PROMIS was largely marketed by Robert Maxwell.

After the Yozma program was established, the first venture capital fund it created was called Gemini Israel Ventures and Israel’s government chose a man named Ed Mlavksy to lead it. Mlavksy, at the time, was the Executive Director of the Israel-U.S. Bi-national Industrial Research and Development Foundation (BIRD), where Erlich was Chairman of the Executive Committee. Mlavsky states that, while heading the BIRD foundation, “he was responsible for investments of $100 million in more than 300 joint projects between U.S. and Israeli high-tech companies.” BIRD’s connections to Gemini Israel Ventures and the Yozma Program in general are interesting, given that – just a few years prior – it had come under scrutiny for its role in the one of the worst spy cases in U.S. history – the Jonathan Pollard affair.

Aside from her father’s own ties to Israeli intelligence, it is worth noting that Isabel’s own history – up to the point she joined CommTouch – involved her working for the Israeli intelligence front company used by her father to sell bugged PROMIS software in the U.S., Information on Demand, and subsequently the search engine Magellan, of which she shared ownership with her sister Christine (whose ties to U.S. intelligence will be explored in Part IV) and her sister Ghislaine, a sexual blackmailer and sex trafficker operating on behalf of U.S. and Israeli intelligence. Isabel’s past with both Magellan and Information on Demand were clearly known to CommTouch at the time of Isabel’s hiring. It also worth noting that, on several occasions, Isabel credits CommTouch’s success with the ties of all of its Israeli employeesto the Israeli military and military intelligence, resulting in – per Isabel – a “dogged work ethic” and a “trained mind-set” among its Israeli workforce.

As will be shown in more detail in Part III of this series, upon departing CommTouch, Isabel deepened her already close ties to prominent Israeli politicians and intelligence officials, serving alongside ex-Mossad directors and counting former Israeli chief intelligence officers and heads of state among her “family friends” and business partners. This involvement continued during the period when her son was given a prominent position at the Middle East affairs desk at the State Department when it was headed by Hillary Clinton, who – as many are now aware – has close and controversial ties to Isabel’s sister, Ghislaine.

Microsoft’s Co-founders put CommTouch “On the Map”

Upon taking the job at the Israeli tech firm, Maxwell’s promotion of the company was called “almost messianic” even though her enthusiasm was described as “hard to fathom” given the lackluster performance of the company and its products. However, soon after becoming CommTouch’s president, her personal connections to prominent figures in Silicon Valley – forged through her past work at Magellan – paid off and the company announced new partnershipswith Sun Microsystems, Cisco, and Nippon Telephone and Telegraph, among others. At CommTouch, Maxwell managed“all sales and marketing activities for CommTouch and co-direct[ed] strategic business development.”

Some reports have noted that Maxwell’s connections with prominent Silicon Valley figures were the key to her professional success, with Globes noting that “Everyone who has worked closely with Maxwell says that her advantage lies in her ability to help penetrate the market with a new product by opening the right doors,” an “advantage” also ascribed to her father while he sold bugged PROMIS software on behalf of Israeli intelligence. Yet, despite Isabel’s penchant for “opening the right doors,” reports well into Maxwell’s career at CommTouch still referred to the firm as “an obscure software developer.”

However, out of all the alliances and partnerships Isabel negotiated early on during her time at CommTouch, it was her dealings with Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen that would put CommTouch “on the map.” Maxwell had previously negotiated a major deal with Microsoft’s Bill Gates earlier during her time as the McKinley Group/Magellan’s Executive Vice President, resulting in Microsoft announcing that the Maxwell-owned Magellan would power the search option for the company’s MSN service.

Yet, it appears that Microsoft’s co-founders did much more than put CommTouch “on the map,” but ended up preventing the collapse of its initial public offering, a fate that had befallen Isabel Maxwell’s previous company, the McKinely Group, not long before. Indeed, CommTouch kept pushing back its IPO until a massive investment from firms tied to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen was announced in July 1999.

Brazilian Faith Healer ‘John of God’ Is Sentenced To Additional 99 Years for Sexual Crimes – Once Promoted by Oprah, Serial Rapist Now Faces 370 Years in Prison, but Awaits Appeals Under House Arrest

For decades, from his small town in Center-west Brazilian state of Goiás, João Teixeira de Faria built a worldwide reputation as a medium and faith healer.

Both the common people and celebrities flocked to his house on the outskirts of the Federal District of Brasília, in search of his ‘healing touch’ and his highly controversial psychic surgeries.

O Globo reported:

“João Teixeira de Faria, ‘João de Deus’, gained a following of faithful foreigners – who call him ‘John of God’ – when he appeared on a program by American presenter Oprah Winfrey, in 2012. Among his international fans, figures like former US president Bill Clinton, actress Shirley MacLaine and model Naomi Campbell.”

But it all came crashing down in 2018, when a scandal of gigantic proportions broke, revealing that the medium had raped or abused hundreds of women and girls that sought his ‘spiritual help’.

“This Monday, the 10th, the medium, better known as João de Deus, was sentenced to an additional sentence of 99 years in prison for sexual crimes.

The Justice considered that the medium committed ‘rape of vulnerable person’ and ‘sexual violation through fraud’ against eight victims between the years 2010 and 2018. In addition to the prison sentence, João de Deus was also condemned to pay R$ 100 thousand in compensation for moral damages to the victims.

Despite the new convictions establishing the fulfillment of the sentence in a closed regime, João de Deus is currently under house arrest due to a second instance decision. Since his arrest at the end of 2018, he has alternated between a closed regime and house arrest. The defense of João de Deus alleged that he suffers from a series of illnesses to obtain this benefit.”

All cases are still possible to be appealled. According to court records, João de Deus committed abuses against at least 42 victims between 1985 and 2018.

Incredible as it may seem, this torrent of accusations of sex crimes against people who put their misguided trust on him was NOT the worst accusations against the ‘healer’.

While these allegations have been erased from all recent coverage of the story, I’m here to remind you that an activist blew the whistle on the fact that ‘John of God’ allegedly ‘ran a baby trafficking operation where children were then sold to childless couples’.
