I swear to God I've said exactly the same thing many times over the years. I'm convinced it's because fruit grows on trees and it takes no thought or effort to survive winter.
Winter is what has driven the development of intellect. Those "species" that have developed near the equator are not really "smart" because they don't have to be to survive.
