Burisma Exec Discussed Expectations of ‘High-Ranking US Officials in Ukraine’ with Hunter Biden

Hunter Biden’s associate in his business with Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings discussed expectations of “high-ranking US officials in Ukraine” one month before then-Vice President Joe Biden visited Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to demand the firing of a prosecutor investigating the company.

Joe Biden, who bragged in 2018 about the firing of prosecutor Viktor Shokin by Poroshenko, was on an official visit to Ukraine in 2015. During the visit, he met with Poroshenko in Kiev about Ukraine’s corruption. But four months after the meeting, Poroshenko fired Shokin, a prosecutor investigating Burisma, which paid Hunter Biden $83,000 a month to sit on its board.

On November 2, 2015, one month before Joe Biden visited Ukraine, Hunter Biden received an email from Vadym Pozharskyi, a Burisma executive, about his “ultimate purpose” of working with Hunter Biden and his associates, Eric Schwerin and Devon Archer, a fellow Burisma board member.

Pozharskyi wrote the email with the subject line: “Re: Revised Burisma Proposal, Contract and Invoice.” The email outlines the scope of work he expected from Hunter Biden and his associates regarding a new project. It detailed the “ultimate purpose” of an agreement with Blue Star Strategies to shut down “any cases/pursuits against Nikolay in Ukraine,” referring to Mykola Zlochevsky, who also went by Nikolay.

Blue Star Strategies is a Washington, DC, PR firm that worked for Burisma. Hunter Biden connected the firm to Burisma through Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s wife, according to emails from Hunter Biden’s laptop.

“Dear colleagues, Hope you are well. Thank you for the docs provided. I have analyzed them most carefully and came up with a few of the following observations…” Pozharskyi wrote to Hunter and his associates:

Gymnastics Australia backs away from pledge to assist survivors of childhood sexual abuse

Three years after publicly pledging its commitment to a redress scheme that could offer apologies and compensation to gymnasts who suffered childhood sexual abuse, Gymnastics Australia has declared itself financially incapable of assisting abuse survivors.

Key points:

Gymnastics Australia says it is financially incapable of supporting sexual abuse survivors

The sport's governing body committed to the National Redress Scheme in 2020

The gymnastics boss told a parliamentary committee that the AOC had declined to help

In its 2020 annual report, Gymnastics Australia said it had "continued to engage with the National Redress Scheme throughout the year and has formally commenced the on-boarding process".

But in a move that has frustrated survivors of childhood sexual abuse in the sport, Gymnastics Australia chief executive Alexandra Ash has confirmed the governing body is still "in a financial position that prevented it from being accepted by the scheme", which offers personal apologies and compensation capped at $150,000 for individual claims.

Gymnastics Australia's position was confirmed in a May submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Implementation of the National Redress Scheme. The committee asked Ash to respond to a series of questions from athlete rights advocate Alison Quigley, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse in gymnastics now undertaking a doctorate in law, studying child-safe policies in Australian gymnastics.

In another response to the committee, Ms Ash confirmed that the Australian Olympic Committee had declined an opportunity to financially underwrite Gymnastics Australia's assistance to survivors of abuse, in an arrangement that would have been similar to Cricket Australia's recent bankrolling of Cricket ACT's obligations under the scheme.

"It is understood that the National Redress Scheme formally approached Australian Olympic Committee to fund Gymnastics Australia's application to the scheme, of which was declined," Ash told the committee.

"Gymnastics Australia is working directly with the National Redress Scheme on options to engage with the scheme."

In response to questions from ABC Sport, Gymnastics Australia declined to comment further on the Australian Olympic Committee's stance.

In June 2022, Ms Ash had privately confirmed to Ms Quigley that Gymnastics Australia was financially incapable of meeting the requirements of the scheme.

Ms Quigley confirmed to ABC Sport that although she appreciated Ms Ash's "open line of communication" and frankness in admitting a year ago that Gymnastics Australia could not yet fund hers and other claims, she "needed this in a written format to bring more accountability and transparency to this process".

"A CEO's quiet word to one survivor is not public accountability," Ms Quigley said.

"The time to sign on was then [in 2020]. Why would they not? They were in good financial shape. And from what was said in the press, they knew sex offenders had been circulating in the sport and they were issuing generalised apologies.

"But the next few financial cycles have come and gone and they still haven't joined the redress scheme."

Award-winning teacher, who was caught in bed with student by husband, sentenced to jail for sexual assault

A former award-winning teacher has been sentenced to jail over a sexual assault of a student more than a decade ago.

Leah Ruthann Queen, 44, pleaded guilty to having a sexual relationship with a student. Benton County Circuit Judge Brad Karren sentenced Queen to six years of state-supervised probation and 58 days in the Benton County Jail. She was also ordered not to have any contact with the victim.

Queen is required to register as a sex offender and must complete a sex offender treatment program.

Queen – who was arrested last September for sexual assault – initially pleaded not guilty, but changed her plea to guilty.

Queen was a teacher at the Gentry Intermediate School in Arkansas.

Queen reportedly had an inappropriate relationship with a student in the summer of 2010.

KNWA-TV reported, "An affidavit says that the victim claims that when they were 17-years-old Queen befriended them after a basketball game and the two began socializing outside of school hours."

The teacher reportedly kissed the student during a camping trip.

The sexual assault occurred in Queen's office and office bathroom at the school, according to the affidavit. At the time, Queen was 31-years-old.

"Queen's ex-husband also reported seeing the victim sharing a bed with his ex-wife on several occasions," according to the Daily Mail.

The victim’s parents and a former teacher corroborated the victim's accusations of the teacher sex scandal.

Before her arrest, Queen had been a teacher in the Gentry School District for more than 20 years.

Queen was named "Teacher of the Month" at her school in 2019 and "Teacher of the Year" in 2022.

When Queen won her award, she told KNWA-TV, "When i was a girl in the second grade, I had a teacher who did not make feel like I was very much. I just wanted to love my babies. I have a passion and drive for this and they love me back."
