China considers the nine-dash lined (in green in attached pic) Chinese territorial waters, Anon.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine-dash_line

What is the South China Sea dispute?

China claims by far the largest portion of territory in an area demarcated by its so-called "nine-dash line". The line comprises nine dashes which extends hundreds of miles south and east from its most southerly province of Hainan. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-pacific-13748349

China’s “Nine-dash Line” Claim: The US Misunderstands

Therefore, it is easy to understand that, in February 1948, the Chinese government released a Map of the Location of South China Sea Islands, with the main purpose of clarifying China’s inherent territorial sovereignty under the post-war international order. Therefore, when publicising the map with the “dash-line”, China claimed the sovereignty over all the insular features rather than the maritime jurisdiction. https://chinaus-icas.org/research/chinas-nine-dash-line-claim-us-misunderstands/

>Why would they deliberately destroy the societies that support them?

The goal is total destruction of the competition. Sometimes [they] fatten the calf for a period before the slaughter. It is easy to profit from planned chaos. Then it is on to the next targeted host.

>But why?

There are many theories and even arguments of international law. Personally I suspect the PLA is planning for the last major conflict and wishes to have a buffer between Oz (Anglo-American power) and the Chinese mainland. Even sand islands and reefs can hold YJ-12s, HQ-9s and support KJ-500 aircraft. https://amti.csis.org/chinese-power-projection/

The Nine-Dash Line in the South China Sea: History, Status, and Implications

China’s deployment of radar, anti-ship and anti-air missile platforms, and combat aircraft to its outposts in the South China Sea has greatly expanded its ability to project power in waters far from its own coast. This feature will illustrate how these three capabilities are fundamentally linked, and how China’s aircraft carriers can take advantage of them to comfortably conduct operations at greater distances.
