DEVELOPING | Joburg explosion: City of Johannesburg confirms explosion was caused by gas
City of Johannesburg officials confirmed on Friday the cause of the Lilian Ngoyi Street (formerly Bree Street) explosion in the CBD was caused by gas.
In a briefing on Friday, city manager Floyd Brink said technicians on the scene had uncovered an old gas line, believed to be an old Johannesburg Gas line.
Brink said they were still determining if the line was connected to Egoli Gas, but they would isolate and trace its origins. He cautioned they could not yet say if this line was the cause of the blast but suspected it could be.
Brink says the old Joburg gas line is still active. The city will soon close and isolate it. Lagrange said the old line was inactive in most areas. He says the Egoli Gas lines were isolated, and several valves were excavated to ensure all the pipes were isolated.
They tested the main pipe and cut parts of it and found "zero gas". He says some gas was found mid-way in the explosion.
Under the rubble, they found the Egoli Gas line, which is active with methane gas. It is unclear if it's connected to the Egoli line as part of a distribution line from its tenants or clients.
