It's important to remember that like any other database, there can sometimes be errors. I think what you are seeing is a simply issue of the site getting shithammered during successive Q posts. You have to imagine that we're probably testing the upper limits of this place when Q team shows up, we post our responses, and Q posts again, we post responses, and the cycle continues.
That running count is probably done at intervals and updated in the database based on routines. Once that happens for that particular post (a per entry in the database, if you will) then that count doesn't get adjusted after future posts are made; it is only updated on future posts; probably on a running total – Again; if the site/database can keep up.
