The rampant sexual abuse of children in Afghanistan has put the American military in a difficult position. In some cases, US soldiers and Marines have been instructed to ignore or not intervene when Afghan allies sexually abuse boys on military bases, in an effort to avoid offending Afghan cultural norms. This policy has become a source of concern and frustration for many service members who feel it undermines America’s overall mission in Afghanistan. Further, when soldiers disobey this policy and expose instances of child abuse, they are often met with disciplinary action or career ruin. The policy of ignoring child sexual abuse is now coming under new scrutiny.

>Bacha bāzī (Persian: , lit. 'boy play')[1] is a slang term used in Afghanistan[2][3] for a custom in Afghanistan involving child sexual abuse by older men of young adolescent males or boys, called dancing boys, often involving sexual slavery and child prostitution.[4] Though outlawed, bacha bazi is still practiced in certain regions of Afghanistan.[5][6][3] Force and coercion are common, and security officials of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan stated they were unable to end such practices and that many of the men involved in bacha bazi are powerful and well-armed warlords.[7][8][9]
