Maj. Gen. Anthony Potts, who until weeks ago led the service’s Program Executive Office Command, Control and Communications-Tactical, or PEO C3T, died at the scene near 3600 Old Level Road in Havre de Grace, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and media reports.
Potts was the only person in the single-engine plane when it went down in a field July 25. No one on the ground was hurt. Dozens of first-responders were dispatched to search for the wreckage, according to the Level Volunteer Fire Company. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the matter.
Potts, who grew up in Kentucky, planned to retire soon after nearly four decades of military service. He was commissioned as an Army aviation second lieutenant in 1986 and later served in operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He was also an attack helicopter platoon leader in Germany.
Potts most recently helmed PEO C3T, tasked with developing, deploying and supporting battlefield communications gear. Before that, he led PEO Soldier, which deals in everyday equipment, such as uniforms, body armor, night-vision devices and guns. Both roles were considered critical to protecting troops and modernizing the way the Army fights.
Maj. Gen. Robert Collins, who led PEO C3T prior to Potts, in June 2022 described the Kentuckian as “a truly a strategic and critical thinker, a team builder.”
“He understands the modernization instrument and how it runs,” Collins said at the time, “and he certainly understands that the centerpiece of our modernization is our soldiers.”

Legendary national security journalist Seymour Hersh has published a report this week alleging US intelligence helped the Ukrainians blow up the Kerch Bridge (or also, Crimean Bridge), which happened earlier this month and corresponded to President Putin refusing to renew the Black Sea Grain Initiative deal.
What's more is that Hersh's sources described that the US assisted in the initial, larger Kerch Bridge explosion which had initially temporarily disabled it in October 2022. "The Biden administration’s role in both attacks was vital," he wrote in a Thursday Substack investigative article.
"Of course it was our technology," an unnamed US official told Hersh, referring to the sea drone which detonated under the vital bridge on July 17. "The drone was remotely guided and half submerged–like a torpedo."
The source cited is said to be a US intelligence official who is speaking out anonymously "from the point of view of those in the American intelligence community who don’t feel they have the ear of President Joe Biden but should."

One alleged truck thief is dead, another wounded in a Texas shootout that also left the vehicle's owner wounded. The dead man's brother audaciously claims "the victim was my brother" – a sentiment that will find few subscribers in the Lone Star State.
The action started early Thursday afternoon at the South Park Mall on the southwest side of San Antonio. A 45-year-old man exited the mall along with his female passenger, only to find his Ford truck was missing. Looking around, they spotted the truck in a nearby lot at the same mall – with the apparent thieves sitting in it.
The owner approached his truck and displaying a pistol ordered the 34-year-old male driver and the thief's 25-year-old female passenger to step outside and take a seat on the pavement. Two minutes after police were called, the male suspect drew a pistol from his waistband and shot the truck's owner.
The owner returned fire, hitting and killing the shooter and critically wounding the shooter's companion. Clarifying the account at a press conference held at the mall, San Antonio police chief William McManus said, "The bad guy is the one dead, yes. The driver of the stolen vehicle is deceased, shot by the owner of the stolen vehicle."

Scientists have successfully genetically engineered invasive female fruit flies to reproduce without the need for males.
The researchers disclosed on Friday that they induced a “virgin birth” or parthenogenesis, in the Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) species, marking the first-ever occurrence of such a phenomenon in a traditionally sexually reproducing animal.
The offspring produced from these virgin births were able to further propagate without the need for mating. The comprehensive study was recently published in the journal Current Biology.
Facultative parthenogenesis is a cool trick some organisms have where they can switch between making babies the usual way, with a partner, and making babies all by themselves (which is called asexual parthenogenesis).Researchers looked at two types of fruit fly species. One type needs a male to have babies (sexual reproduction), while the other type can have babies without a male (parthenogenesis). They studied the genetic makeup of these two types and found differences in how certain genes work in their eggs.These researchers then wondered if they could make a related fruit fly species, which normally requires a male to reproduce, have babies without a male. They did this by tweaking some of the genes they found in the first type of fruit fly.
They focused on three specific genes: one called ‘polo’, another called ‘Desat2’, and a third one named ‘Myc’. By making ‘polo’ work harder and ‘Desat2’ work less, they managed to make the fruit fly that normally needs a male to have babies reproduce without one. And this effect was even stronger when ‘Myc’ was made to work harder.

Exclusive: Pentagon Investigates ‘Critical Compromise’ Of Air Force Communications Systems
The Pentagon is investigating what it has called a “critical compromise” of communications across 17 Air Force facilities by one of its engineers, according to a search warrant obtained by Forbes. The document also details evidence of a possible breach of FBI communications by the same employee, who worked at the Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee.
The government had been tipped off by a base contractor that the 48-year-old engineer had taken government radio technologies home, effectively stealing them for his own use, according to the warrant, which alleged the amount of pilfered equipment was worth nearly $90,000.
When law enforcement raided his home, they found he had “unauthorized administrator access” to radio communications tech used by the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), “affecting 17 DoD installations,” according to the warrant. The AETC is one of nine “major commands,” defined by the Pentagon as “interrelated and complementary, providing offensive, defensive, and support elements” to Air Force HQ.
