Russia accuses West of turning Ukraine into ‘radioactive landfill’

British supplies of depleted uranium munitions show the “ruthlessness” of Western policy in Ukraine, Moscow has said

Russia has condemned the UK’s decision to send depleted uranium (DU) shells to Ukraine, saying the move marks an “all-out escalation”after the British Defence Ministry confirmed the radioactive weapons were already in Kiev’s hands.

Moscow’s UK embassy issued a statement on Tuesday after senior official James Heappey acknowledged that the British DU munitions had arrived on the battlefield, to be fired from Challenger 2 tanks also supplied to Ukraine.

“James Heappey’s comments are a grim testament to the ruthlessness of the Anglo-Saxons’ policy of all-out escalation of the ‘proxy conflict’ they themselves unleashed in Ukraine,” it said. “He cynically stated that London is not monitoring the deployment of these weapons and has no obligation to eliminate the consequences of their use following the end of the conflict,” the statement read.

It has by now become self-evident that the West intends this country to become not only an anti-Russian military ‘shooting range,’ but also a radioactive landfill – with all the ensuing grave consequences for the health of local residents and the environment in the region.

The embassy went on to say that the British government would be responsible for the effects of the “toxic ammunition” and could not escape accountability by passing them off to Ukrainian forces.

In an interview with RT last week, Russia’s envoy to Britain, Ambassador Andrey Kelin, warned that DU munitions will be a “terrible thing… for the agriculture and for the people”of Ukraine, saying radioactive residue could contaminate the country’s water and soil “for at least six generations.”

Both UK and US officials have disputed the purported health hazards associated with DU shells – which use a dense uranium core to improve their armor-piercing capabilities – and deny allegations that the weapons were linked to a spike in cancer and birth defects in Iraq.

Heappey claimed that depleted uranium carries only “low” health and environmental risks, pointing to a 2007 government study. He added that the Defence Ministry would make no effort to track where Ukrainian forces use British-supplied DU rounds, and has “no obligation” to assist clean-up efforts after the conflict.

However, according to Doug Weir, an expert with the Conflict and Environment Observatory, uranium munitions generate “chemically toxic and radioactive DU particulate” when they strike hard targets, adding that the dust poses “an inhalational risk to people.” Other recent research has also indicated that the weapons could produce “adverse health outcomes” given the “chemotoxic and radiotoxic” properties of DU.

Moscow has urged foreign powers to cease all weapon shipments to Ukraine, arguing that the aid will not deter its military aims but only prolong the conflict. After the UK announced its decision to supply depleted uranium rounds to Kiev last month, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Western nations would like to “see Ukraine completely destroyed” and are acting with “absolute recklessness, irresponsibility and impunity.”

Get ready, skywatchers: A sturgeon supermoon is coming Tuesday, and a rare super blue moon will appear Aug. 30-31.

Up first: the sturgeon supermoon. The moon will reach its peak illumination at 2:32 p.m. EDT Tuesday, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. After sunset that evening, turn your gaze to the southeast to catch a glimpse of the rising sturgeon moon.

The sturgeon moon was named for the large fish in the Great Lakes, which were most easily caught at this time of the year.

August also will see a rare super blue moon. The last super blue moon was in December 2009. After the super blue moon of August, you'll need to set a reminder on your calendar for the next one − August 2032, a full nine years from now.

What is a supermoon?

When the moon’s orbit brings it closer to Earth than usual, the cosmic combo is called a supermoon.

When this happens, the moon can appear slightly bigger and brighter than normal.

"Different publications use slightly different thresholds for deciding when a full moon is close enough to the Earth to qualify as a supermoon," NASA said. "Because the orbit of the moon is not a perfect circle, the moon is sometimes closer to the Earth than at other times during its orbit."

On average, supermoons appear about 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical full moon.

When will the super blue moon occur?

On Aug. 30-31, a blue full moon will appear and reach its peak illumination at 9:36 p.m. EDT.

When someone uses the term "once in a blue moon," you know they are talking about a rare event. (The color of the moon really isn't blue, of course. A blue moon still has the same appearance as a typical monthly full moon.)

Actually, a blue moon is unique because it's the fifth full moon of the season, or the "extra" moon. Normally, this occurs only every 2½ years. The second full moon in a month also has been known as a "blue moon" since the 1940s. Typically, this also only occurs once every 2½ years.

After the August super blue moon, the next time the moon will be this close to Earth will be on Nov. 5, 2025, when the moon will be "only" 221,817 miles from Earth.

Moon calendar for the rest of 2023

A full moon typically occurs every 29 days, but because most months are 30 or 31 days, it is sometimes possible for two full moons to occur in the same month.

The Farmers' Almanac predicts that the blue moon on Aug. 30 will be the year's biggest supermoon.
