It is the Old Sun that became a ball of ice. Real question is, how does it stay afloat up there. Either that or it's Plasma (only revealed by the Sun).

God made the Sun and Moon so we have a sense of Time. When a Sun dies out, it's corpse just remains as Plasma I guess.
I cried once or twice during the beginning of Q days when it was all being revealed initially. Ever since then I'm quite numb and just ask God regularly to give me what I need to completely annihilate my enemies.
