New law to allow abortion for under 16s in WA

Girls under the age of 16 will be able to have abortions without having to tell their parents under proposed laws being introduced to Western Australia's State Parliament next week.
WA is the only state in Australia where minors, regardless of their maturity, are required to inform one parent or guardian if they wanted to terminate a pregnancy.
The parent or guardian must also be given the opportunity to take part in counselling before a decision is made.
Currently, if a child wants an abortion in WA and does not want to tell their parents, the only way they can do it is by making an application to the Children’s Court.
The Abortion Legislation Reform Bill 2023 would change this by recognising the concept of the mature minor, whereby a young person has sufficient understanding and intelligence to consent to their own medical treatment.
'Medical practitioners are well versed in processes to determine the decision-making capacity of children,' said WA Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson, according to the West Australian.
Ms Sanderson conceded some MPs may have strong views on the subject and stressed it was a conscience vote - where parliamentarians can vote according to their personal views rather than party policy.
She expected there to be a 'respectful and sensitive debate' on the matter next week.
'Parliamentarians are experienced enough and grown up enough to do this in a sensitive way while also expressing their own personal views,' she said.
WA was the first state to decriminalise abortion, enacting legislation in 1998.
However, it has not fallen behind other jurisdictions since then.
In 2012, WA became the last state to legislate 'safe access zones', which prevent picketing within 150 metres of abortion clinics.
