Charlotte Pride has chosen to honor Chad Turner with the Harvey Milk Award - an award named after one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States.
Let's examine Chad Turner's unsettling conviction for sexual molestation of a minor.
Back in 2000, he was found guilty of molesting a 15-year-old boy.
The victim testified that Turner "fondled" him while they were staying overnight at a house, where Turner served as a youth minister. It is deeply troubling that an organization like Charlotte Pride would choose to celebrate a man with such a disturbing criminal record.
Turner's role in advocating for transgender individuals' bathroom rights is highly questionable. While serving as the president of the Charlotte Business Guild in 2016, Turner actively pushed for legislation allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice.
The fact that Turner has used multiple aliases, including Chad Sevealance, Chad Sevearance, and Eugene Severance, is a huge red flag.
Someone who constantly changes their name arouses suspicion and raises doubts about their integrity and credibility.
It is worth noting that Harvey Milk himself faced accusations of statutory rape against a 16-year-old runaway named Jack Galen McKinley. These allegations tarnish Milk's legacy and make one question the suitability of an award bearing his name.
Choosing Chad Turner, with his troubling background, might in fact be par for the course for an award with such low credibility.
Did Charlotte Pride fail to conduct proper due diligence or did they deliberately chose to celebrate Chad Turner's disgusting past?
