On May 7, 2018, Smith was named to a four-year term as chief prosecutor for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, investigating war crimes in the Kosovo War, including the case of Salih Mustafa. He took up the post on September 11, 2018, and was appointed to a second term on May 8, 2022, before stepping down on November 18, 2022.
Smith, 54, is married to Katy Chevigny, a documentary filmmaker. The couple has a daughter, and has been living in the Netherlands since 2018. He is currently working from there because he is recovering from a cycling injury, according to the DOJ.
The only thing Smith has said publicly since his appointment is a three-sentence statement issued by the DOJ, in which Smith pledged to be independent and expedient.
Before his appointment to the Hague, Smith lived and worked in Tennessee.
