mars HAD an atmosphere. that is indisputable. the surface shows unmistakeable evidence of past rivers, meaning rain, meaning atmosphere.
mars also once had a planetary magnetic field, protecting its atmosphere from ablation by the solar wind, like earth's van allen belt protects us.
mars is smaller, cooled faster, and the core froze, collapsing the magnetic field.
with no magnetic field, the martian atmosphere was blasted away by the relentless flow of solar wind.
so if mars COULDN'T keep a fully formed atmosphere it originally had,
