Lahaina residents worry a rebuilt Maui town could slip into the hands of affluent outsiders

The cost to live in Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui keeps rising thanks to a chronic housing shortage and an influx of second-home buyers and wealthy transplants snatching up properties

A fast-moving wildfire that incinerated much of the compact coastal settlement last week has multiplied concerns that any homes rebuilt there will be targeted at affluent outsiders seeking a tropical haven. That would turbo-charge what is already one of Hawaii’s gravest and biggest challenges: the exodus and displacement of Native Hawaiian and local-born residents who can no longer afford to live in their homeland.

“I’m more concerned of big land developers coming in and seeing this charred land as an opportunity to rebuild,” Palalay said Saturday at a shelter for evacuees.

Hotels and condos “that we can’t afford, that we can’t afford to live in — that’s what we’re afraid of,” he said.

The median price of a Maui home is $1.2 million, putting a single-family home out of reach for the typical wage earner. It’s not possible for many to even buy a condo, with the median condo price at $850,000.

Sterling Higa, the executive director of Housing Hawaii’s Future, a nonprofit organization that advocates for more housing in Hawaii, said the town is host to many houses that have been in the hands of local families for generations. But it’s also been subject to gentrification.

“So a lot of more recent arrivals — typically from the American mainland who have more money and can buy homes at a higher price — were to some extent displacing local families in Lahaina,” Higa said. It’s a phenomenon he has seen all along Maui’s west coast where a modest starter home two decades ago now sells for $1 million.

Residents with insurance or government aid may get funds to rebuild, but those payouts could take years and recipients may find it won’t be enough to pay rent or buy an alternate property in the interim.

Many on Kauai spent years fighting for insurance payments after Hurricane Iniki slammed into the island in 1992 and said the same could happen in Lahaina, Higa said.

“As they deal with this — the frustration of fighting insurance companies or fighting (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) — many of them may well leave because there are no other options,” Higa said.

Palalay vows to stay.

“I don’t have any money to help rebuild. I’ll put on a construction hat and help get this ship going. I’m not going to leave this place,” he said. “Where am I going to go?”

Gov. Josh Green, during a visit to Lahaina with FEMA, told journalists that he won’t let Lahaina get too expensive for locals after rebuilding. He said he is thinking about ways for the state to acquire land to use for workforce housing or open space as a memorial for those lost.

“We want Lahaina to be a part of Hawaii forever," Green said. "We don’t want it to be another example of people being priced out of paradise.”

he devastating wildfires in Hawaii have brought a new conspiracy theory from climate change deniers who suggest that the destruction was orchestrated by the federal government's directed energy weapons (DEW).

Social media users are circulating photos of light beams and lasers that they claim were taken from Hawaii before this week's deadly fires burned down historic landmarks and killed at least 55 on the island of Maui.

"If the fires in Hawaii were natural, what in the h is this?" one user captioned a photo on X, formerly Twitter. The platform flagged the post with a warning that read, "Image captures an event that occurred in Michigan in 2018, not a current event in Hawaii.

"The Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) being used on Hawaii are powerful enough to set the Pacific Ocean on fire," far-right online personality Stew Peters said.

SUBSCRIBE NOW FROM JUST $1 >

DEWs involve "high energy lasers and other high power electromagnetics" that "use concentrated electromagnetic energy to combat enemy forces and assets," according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO).

Although the Defense Department has spent $1 billion annually on developing these weapons to take down missile and drone threats, an April 2023 GAO report says the department has had trouble deploying these technologies outside of labs because of a lack of transition planning.

The new conspiracies seem to arise from the fact that the Air Force Research Laboratory had devoted a whole wing to developing DEWs "for all air traffic intersecting Hawaiian airspace and territorial waters" in 2007, according to a Wired story. The Directed Energy Directorate is located at the Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico.

Newsweek reached out to the Air Force Research Laboratory via the press inquiry form on its website for comment.

State officials have said that various forms of extreme weather, like dry conditions, low humidity and high winds, set Hawaii up for the extreme wildfires, but their exact cause remains to be determined.

"We don't know what actually ignited the fires, but we were made aware in advance by the National Weather Service that we were in a red flag situation. So that's dry conditions for a long time—so the fuel, the trees and everything was dry," Major General Kenneth Hara of Hawaii's Department of Defense said.

The blazes began as scattered brush fires at the beginning of this week, but a rapid spread fueled by the lack of humidity and strong winds from Hurricane Dora turned them into the most lethal wildfires seen in the U.S. since 2018.

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescuers continue their search and recovery efforts. With Dora, a Category 4 storm, moving farther away from Hawaii and 80 percent of the fires contained, people are expected to be allowed to return by the weekend.

"What we saw was likely the largest natural disaster in Hawaii state history," Governor Josh Green said Thursday in a social media post.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12393699/Oprah-silent-amid-Maui-fires-desperate-Hawaii-residents-beg-celebrity-billionaires-homes-island-help.html

Oprah owns nearly 2,000 acres of land on Maui including an 11-bedroom ranch

Jeff Bezos owns a property on the south shore and Owen Wilson, Clint Eastwood and Steven Tyler also own property .

As the residents of Maui awake to another day of destruction caused by a devastating wildfire that has so far claimed 36 lives and left hundreds homeless, many are wondering where the island's richest landowners are - and what they're prepared to do to help.

Oprah, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, Clint Eastwood and Steven Tyler are among big names with homes on Maui but none have commented yet on how they intend to help those in need.

Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sanchez posted on Instagram that the fires were 'breaking her heart', but he is yet to offer a statement.

With a net worth of $162billion, he is the third richest man in the world. Bezos owns a $78million property on Maui's southwest shore.

Maui's part-time residents include Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bezos, Steven Tyler, Owen Wilson and more. Larry Ellison owns almost the entire island of Lanai, which sits near to the town of Lahaina. Fleetwood Mac's Mick has encouraged fundraising efforts and is himself suffering the loss of his restaurant. There has been silence from the others as thousands of locals try to put the pieces of their lives and homes back together.

A source close to the couple tells DailyMail.com they are 'devastated' by the disaster.

'They have been on the phone with locals and local officials since yesterday. They will be making donations to help the community,' they said.

Oprah, worth $2.5billion, owns nearly 2,000 acres of land on Maui and has been living there part-time for 15 years. It's unclear if any of her land was damaged.

She bought up the most recent parcel - 860 acres - in March this year for $6.6million. Aerosmith's Steven Tyler also has a home on the island, as does Owen Wilson and Clint Eastwood.

Oprah spends much of her time on Maui with best friend Gayle King. The pair are shown during a recent hike in Hawaii

In addition to an 11-bedroom ranch (shown), Oprah also owns nearly 2,000 acres of land in total on Maui

Larry Ellison owns 98 percent of the nearby Lanai Island. The Oracle billionaire is yet to offer a public statement on the catastrophe.

Mark Zuckerberg, who owns a huge home on the island of Kauai, is yet to speak about the disaster.

Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac saw his Lahaina restaurant - Fleetwood's on Front Street - burned to the ground.

In a statement on social media, Mick said: 'Maui and the Lahaina community have been my home for several decades.

'This is a devastating moment for Maui, and many are suffering unimaginable loss.

'Fleetwood’s on Front Street has been lost and while we are heartbroken, our main priority is the safety of our dear staff and team members.

Bezos' home with Sanchez is in the exclusive La Perouse Bay. He paid a whopping $78million for the property which sits on 14 acres

Bezos with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez four days ago in Taormina, Sicily. A source close to the couple tells DailyMail.com they are 'devastated' and have been on the phone with 'locals and local officials' to determine the best way to help

'On behalf of myself and my family, I share my heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the people of Maui.

'We are committed to supporting the community and those affected by this disaster in the days and months and years to come.'

Barack Obama, who grew up in Honolulu and has a home on the Big Island, also released a statement last night with a link to the a local community fundraising effort.

'It’s tough to see some of the images coming out of Hawai’i — a place that’s so special to so many of us.

'Michelle and I are thinking of everyone who has lost a loved one, or whose life has been turned upside down. If you’d like to help, you can do so here,' he said.

Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac saw his Lahaina restaurant - Fleetwood's on Front Street - torched to the ground

Jason Momoa, who is from Honolulu, also appealed for help for the island's residents.

'We are devastated and heartbroken for our friends and 'ohana on Maui who been impacted by the recent wildfires.'

Momoa has repeatedly shared links to the fundraising efforts.

Bette Midler, who also has a home in Hawaii, tweeted about the ongoing disaster effort.

And Pierce Brosnan and his wife Keely Shaye Brosnan, who have a home on Kauai, have called for support.

'My sincere and heartfelt prayers for Maui, the Hawaiian community, residents, families and animals affected by these unprecedented wildfires,' Keely posted on Instagram.

'If you are able, please consider making a donation to the Hawaii/Maui Community Foundation to help those in need.'

The American Red Cross is in Hawaii to assist with the recovery that officials say will take 'years'.

According to Deadline, celebrity chef Jose Andres - who regularly lends his help in natural disasters - is working on a plan to bring food to many of Maui's locals.

The death toll from the fires has now risen to 36, with hundreds still missing and hundreds left homeless.

“So is Oprah gonna open her wallet to help rebuild Maui”: Netizens discuss media star’s involvement in the aftermath of the wildfire

Oprah Winfrey's massive property in Maui has triggered online speculations about whether or not they were impacted due to the wildfire on the island. Over the years, Oprah has purchased over a few thousand acres of land and has even been a part-time resident of the island.

Among multiple properties on the island, some notable ones include 2000 acres of farmland on the side of Haleakala, a dormant volcano at a height of 4000 feet, and a private ranch.

Then there are the 870 acres of agricultural land spread across Kula, a part of Upcountry, to the western-facing slopes of Haleakala, all the way to Makawao and Kanaio. As per Maui Now, she bought the last one for a whopping

$ 6.6 million

in February this year, which added to her existing properties in Kula and Hana.

https://www.sportskeeda.com/pop-culture/news-bomb-shelter-hideout-oprah-maui-conspiracy-theory-goes-viral-sparks-ridicule-online

Since the news of Oprah having properties in Maui has surfaced on social media, netizens have spun their own conspiracy theories. While some believe she was allegedly involved in the fires caused by an alleged bomb, others have pointed out that she may have underground facilities in her Maui homes, used primarily for hideouts
