It is a spiritual war that predates mankind by a very great deal.
Certain of the fallen are especially militant and seek to hurt God by hurting and killing his children. The more innocent, the more pain.
The 'death cult' are those mortals who've fallen under the evil ones and seek favor in hell. Black magic is still magic and the thralls seek it and deal in it. It is the fiat currency of the spirit realm. False and temporary. Unlike their judgment. Which is very near.
As for Earth…but before mankind, look into the Igigi revolt against the Anunnaki, Enlil in particular.
Read the account of the fallen angels. It is an allegory of the same. Within the apochrypha other clues emerge as to God's judgment upon the fallen angels. Basically to remain bound to the Earth beyond the passing of their flesh, so becoming spiritually imprisoned intelligences full of rage and mutiny, and hating the divine children of God and tormenting them and God for their revenge.
This they know will be futile, but gives them some sense of agency in hurting God for handing down their purgatorial sentence, which will be followed by a final one.

Fallen Angels
My father was an authoritarian, my mom a kind spoiler. Neither were perfect. They got smarter and more relatable as I got closer to them.
They meant well and I turned out OK. Think of Enlil, Enki, and the other high council Anunnaki like parents that have more and better intelligence and your best interests at heart, but differing and sometimes hard to understand methods. Some, no doubt, will click w you more than others, but try to not to judge too harshly from low ground.
When I was a young officer, I disagreed with a lot of those in my chain of command, but did as I was told, lived to see many days, and when I sat in those same desks, wound up doing many of the same things, for exactly the same and very good reasons they did, only I knew it then and not before.
If we are to believe our fathers, then these are gods and capable of greatness. Lets see how this all plays out and reserve judgment for the end.
