QAnon’s conspiracy theories are both bizarre and baseless: from the claim that Democrats are running a sex-trafficking ring through a pizza parlour, to the theory that Donald Trump is leading the fight against a cabal of paedophiles, and the story that JFK is returning from the dead more than 50 years after his assassination.

Now, the cult’s latest wild conspiracy centres around the death of its own leader.

Michael Protzman, the 60-year-old QAnon leader, died on 30 June after suffering “multiple blunt force injuries” in a dirt bike accident.

Protzman, who was known to his followers as Negative 48, was driving a dirt bike at the Meadow Valley Motocross track in Millville, Minnesota, when he crashed.

Around a week later he died from his injuries at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, the clinic confirmed to VICE News.

Or did he?

In the week since his untimely passing, QAnon members have refused to accept the death of their leader and instead claim the whole tragedy is a hoax.

An admin on the Telegram channel used by members of the group – who Protzman managed to convince Mr Trump is in fact JFK Jr in disguise – said they would be removing all mention of their leader’s death until they “have absolute verification”.

Another member was booted out of the Truth Social group for asking a question about Protzman’s condition, Vice reported.

One follower, Shelly Mullinax, who fell out with the QAnon leader prior to his death offered another theory as to his demise – suggesting that only a part of him had been killed in the dirt bike accident.

She told Vice that the good part of Protzman, who she said was also JFK in disguise, had survived the accident while the evil part of him had been killed.

She might have been one of the world's premier sex symbols, but Marilyn Monroe was plagued with well-documented personal insecurities – among them the possibility she might be a lesbian, a new book alleges.

Author Lois Banner describes Monroe's doubts about her sexuality in her new book, "Marilyn: The Passion and the Paradox," an extract of which has been published in The Guardian.

"She had affairs with many eminent men –- baseball great Joe DiMaggio, playwright Arthur Miller, director Elia Kazan, actor Marlon Brando, singer Frank Sinatra, the Kennedy brothers –- and she married DiMaggio and Miller," Banner writes. "Yet she desired women, had affairs with them, and worried that she might be lesbian by nature."

She continues, "How could she be the world's heterosexual sex goddess and desire women? How could she have the world's most perfect body on the outside and have such internal imperfections? Why was she unable to bear a child? The adult Marilyn was haunted by these questions."

Still, Banner's profile of Monroe, who died in 1962 at the age of 36, is more flattering in other respects. The author even argues that the icon, frequently brushed aside as a "dumb blonde" or simply as a sex object, had the makings of an early feminist.

"She certainly took actions that could be called feminist," she writes. "Her entire life was a process of self-formation. She was a genius at self-creation and made herself into an actress and a star. She formed her own production company, she fought the moguls to a standstill, and she publicly named the sexual abuse visited on her as a child: a major –- and unacknowledged –- feminist act."

Of course, Banner is by no means the first to argue that the "Some Like It Hot" star might have swung both ways. Monroe is believed to have admitted to sexual encounters with Joan Crawford and Marlene Dietrich, as well as acting coach Paula Strasberg.

Trump Team Backs Away From Lin Wood After Pence Tweets

Pro-Trump lawyer Lin Wood’s prediction that Vice President Mike Pence could “face execution by firing squad” for “treason” is prompting Trumpworld to once again try and distance itself from the Atlanta attorney. Jenna Ellis, an attorney for the Trump campaign, declared in a tweet late Friday: “I do not support the statements from Attorney Lin Wood. I support the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution.” Wood blasted Pence after his attorneys challenged a lawsuit from Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert, which sought to force the vice president to block the counting of electoral votes for Joe Biden when Congress meets to ratify the election.

Separately, Nicholas Sandmann, the former Covington Catholic High School student who Wood represented in defamation suits against media outlets stemming from coverage of a confrontation at the Lincoln Memorial, linked to Wood’s Pence tweet with the comment, “I’m sorry but what the hell.”

Pence’s five-part plan generally limits the federal government’s powers in favor of the states.

The plan starts with eliminating the federal Department of Education, and sending educational funds directly to the states. Pence has long been an advocate of “school choice,” or education strategies that allow parents to enroll their children in schools other than their assigned district public schools, often using public funding.

Pence also advocated to repeal the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. The plan would divert federal dollars currently spent on low-income health care services and on insurance subsidies toward the states.

The federal government owns 28% of U.S. land, according to a 2020 Congressional Research Service report, and Pence wants to change that. He said that “a portion of” the land should be returned to the states for “development” and “innovation.”

The plan also calls on the states to take over all social safety net programs currently administered by the federal government, and the money involved similarly turned into grants to states.

The plan concludes with a push to reform the federal highway trust fund, similarly to states’ benefit.

“Under any administration I lead, any regulation that imposes unfunded mandates on the states will be prohibited from day one,” Pence added, to applause. “In my administration, if Washington calls the tune, Washington will pay the bill.”

The federalism plan comes on the heels of plans for the nation’s economy and energy.

On the debate state next week

Pence is among a crowded field of Republicans challenging Trump for the 2024 presidential nomination. He has struggled to gain traction, polling consistently in the 5% range, according to a FiveThirtyEight compilation of national polls.

He said Wednesday that he was grateful to qualify for the Republican presidential debate next week in Milwaukee. That required a certain polling threshold and donor minimum.

And Pence indicated that he’s shedding his staid vice presidential persona.

“I’m well known, but I don’t think I’m known well,” Pence said, recounting how, as second-in-command, he prayed daily “not to be the story.”

“I hope in that debate, people maybe get to know me a little bit better,” he said.

Trump, meanwhile, has said he won’t sign a pledge, required of all participants, to support the GOP’s eventual nominee.

“I hope he comes, I really do,” Pence said. “I always answer (reporters) the same way: I’ve debated Donald Trump a thousand times — just not with the cameras on. … I hope this is the beginning of a vigorous debate about the future of our country.”
