Dr. Shawn Rowland & MAUI Fire
He has been involved in search and rescue
NOTES:
Rowland: talks about FEMA using dogs to search for human remains
level of destruction great
tragedy of enormous magnitude
Bannon: Anyone know how fire started or grew so fast?
R: Greatest magnitude in the last century….there was a small brush fire, might have been downed power line. Guy whose house caught on fire described fireball that consumed his house in 1-2 minutes. He and fam got out. Hurricane Dora played a role.
R: Fire was so hot, was clear were were looking for remains not survivor - melted aluminum, glass. Everything was ash.
B: Govt has put out very little info. 1000-1300 people still missing.
R: Sometimes we just find bones, hard to ID.
1200-1600 on official missing list. will need DNA id. Gov wants to be accurate, he thinks.
Does lead to black holes of uncertainty - "a lot of these were KIDS, unfortunately….that's one aspect."
Number 1 problem: needs of survivors, there were lines of people asking for MEDS - seizure meds, insulin, etc. Broke his heart. Was giving out antibiotics to many.
