Southern California rocked by 5.1 magnitude earthquake as tropical storm hits

The U.S. Geological Survey is warning people to be prepared for aftershocks.

Southern California on Sunday was rocked by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake centered in Ventura County as Tropical Storm Hilary hits the area.

The U.S. Geological Survey is warning people in Ojai, Calif., and the surrounding area to be prepared for aftershocks following the 5.1 magnitude quake shortly after 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Officials said there have already been at least 4 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or higher.

The earthquake in Ojai, which is about 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles, occurred as Tropical Storm Hilary is hitting Southern California, marking the first time the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service have ever issued a tropical storm warning for the area.
