Sen. Ted Cruz Demands Anheuser-Busch Hand Over Dylan Mulvaney Information
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has ramped up demands that Anheuser-Busch hand over documents in relation to an investigation of whether Bud Light's marketing promotion with a transgender influencer was marketing beer to kids.
“The level of cooperation the Committee receives will bear significantly on my assessment of whether this is part of a broader problem across the Anheuser-Busch InBev product line and whether changes to federal law are necessary to prohibit Anheuser-Busch InBev from marketing beer to children,” the Republican senator wrote in a letter (pdf) to Anheuser-Busch InBev CEO Michael Doukeris last week, claiming that AB InBev hasn't sent over the documents three months after he asked the firm.
Mr. Cruz is seeking communications between the company and the transgender influencer, Dylan Mulvaney, as well as social media content scripts, the firm's corporate policy for advertising, and data the beer company possesses on the age demographics of the influencer's following on social media.
The senator made note of Code Compliance Review Board (CCRB) member's dissenting opinion that found that "Mulvaney appeals to persons below the legal drinking age with a ‘special attractiveness’ … is especially attractive to young teens and girls; is often recognized as preadolescent; and caters to very young people.” Ultimately, the CCRB majority found there was nothing in the Instagram posts that would "have special attractiveness below the legal drinking age,” according to its report.
The board also found that the influencer's audience age demographics were more than 80 percent aged 21 or older. The board has a compliance standard of over 73 percent. …

PBS: Democrats Should Be More ‘Grateful’ Biden Is Their ’24 Candidate
Each Friday, PBS NewsHour pits a conservative pundit vs. a liberal for a high-toned debate about the week’s politics. This week, talking about the 2024 election, one of those panelists gave a full-throated salute to President Joe Biden, touting his “incredibly strong economic recovery,” his “pretty good international peacekeeping efforts,” and who “sends off all the right cultural messages.”
“Democrats are not grateful enough for what they have,” this panelist exclaimed.
f you’re a regular NewsBusters reader, you’ve probably already guessed those weren’t the words of liberal columnist Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post (filling in for the Post’s Jonathan Capehart), but rather “conservative” columnist David Brooks of the New York Times. “The Democrats are lucky, frankly, to have a candidate in Biden,” Brooks insisted in dismissing those who think Democrats could do better with another presidential candidate next year.
Of course, liberal panelist Marcus had basically the same point of view (just without the fawning over Biden’s “incredibly strong” record). “If somebody were to emerge and challenge Joe Biden at this stage in the campaign….that would create some divisions within the demographics of the party. I think the Democrats are going to war with what their — what they view as their strongest candidate, and with good reason. That’s Joe Biden,” Marcus opined.
So that was this week’s “debate” over whether Democrats would do best with Biden next year. The groupthink would have been excruciatingly familiar to those who watch PBS’s Brooks & Capehart segment each week. …

ALAN GUEBERT: USDA report hems and haws on competition
After plowing through a new, 57-page USDA report titled “Concentration and Competition in U.S. Agribusiness,” I asked an agronomist friend who had also read the report why it seemed that its writers used so much “hem-and-haw” language in analyzing, for example, the rise of today’s powerful seed companies.
“I’m less interested in the authors’ conclusions and opinions,” the friend emailed back, “and more interested in the data they show. I think it’s up to those of us outside USDA-ERS” — the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service — “to interpret the data in a manner that’s less favorable to corporate agribusinesses.”
That’s good advice. There are reams of data in the report, particularly in three key focus areas: seeds, meatpacking, and food retail. We — or “us” outside of USDA — need to draw our own conclusions and push policymakers to do the same. …

Small farms and small businesses are the backbone of democracy. The USDA and DOJ have sat on the sidelines as a handful of companies have consolidated their control, raking in obscene profits as farmers wallow in debt. It’s monopoly Socialism.
As President, I am going to instruct the DOJ to enforce antitrust laws to ensure a competitive marketplace. I will instruct the USDA to enact sensible regulations that benefit small producers and consumers rather than giant ag corporations. #Kennedy24
