Biden Admin Sought Power to Spy on TikTok Users, Moderate Content(Say it ain’t so, Joe!)

In yet another sign of the Biden Administration’s determination to control, censor, and spy on American social media users, the draft of a proposed deal between Chinese-owned TikTok and the Biden administration shows the latter requesting extraordinary authority over the platform.

The proposed deal, outlined in a 100-page draft obtained by Forbes, would give the U.S. government the power to examine TikTok’s servers with no notice — something that could potentially allow the government to spy on American users.

In a sign of the administration’s preoccupation with censoring social media users, the agreement also reportedly gives the government the power to veto any changes to TikTok’s content moderation policies.

The draft agreement, as it was being negotiated at the time, would give government agencies like the DOJ or the DOD the authority to:

Examine TikTok’s U.S. facilities, records, equipment and servers with minimal or no notice,

Block changes to the app’s U.S. terms of service, moderation policies and privacy policy,

Veto the hiring of any executive involved in leading TikTok’s U.S. Data Security org,

Order TikTok and ByteDance to pay for and subject themselves to various audits, assessments and other reports on the security of TikTok’s U.S. functions, and,

In some circumstances, require ByteDance to temporarily stop TikTok from functioning in the United States.

The draft agreement would make TikTok’s U.S. operations subject to extensive supervision by an array of independent investigative bodies, including a third-party monitor, a third-party auditor, a cybersecurity auditor and a source code inspector. It would also force TikTok U.S. to exclude ByteDance leaders from certain security-related decision making, and instead rely on an executive security committee that would operate in secrecy from ByteDance. Members of this committee would be responsible first for protecting the national security of the United States, as defined by the Executive Branch, and only then for making the company money.

While there is bipartisan concern about the influence of Chinese-controlled TikTok on American citizens, past proposals to rein in the platform have been characterized by many observers as little more than a Patriot Act style power-grab, giving the federal government unprecedented authority over a social media platform and its users.

The government is already facing multiple lawsuits and investigations alleging collusion with Big Tech companies to undermine the First Amendment rights of Americans. Its demand to influence the content moderation policies of TikTok is further evidence of its focus on controlling speech on social media.

Bob Barker, Beloved Host of ‘The Price Is Right’ for Nearly Four Decades, Dead at 99

Bob Barker, the grandfatherly TV personality who presided over “The Price is Right” for close to four decades, has died at 99.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce that the World’s Greatest MC who ever lived, Bob Barker has left us,” Barker’s publicist Roger Neal said in a statement sent to multiple outlets on Saturday. No additional information was given.

With his twinkly eyes and smooth demeanor that put contestants at ease as they competed for the big prize, Barker was an endearing presence who enlivened daytime TV with an almost effortless charm. From 1972 to 2007, his near-perfect attendance on CBS’s “The Price is Right” became a ritual for millions of housewives and children staying home from school.

With his year-round tan, silver hair, and long-handled microphone, Barker was a TV icon who was often parodied but seldom equaled. Even his daily “The Price is Right” sign-off was memorable: “This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population: Have your pets spayed or neutered.”

Barker was an animal rights activist before it became fashionable, using his celebrity status to further the cause of numerous groups.

Later, he hosted the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants for two decades — resigning when they declined to use synthetic furs — and even played himself in the 1996 Adam Sandler golf comedy Happy Gilmore.

After paying his dues in local radio and TV, Barker got his big break as host of NBC’s game show “Truth or Consequences,” starting in 1956 and continuing through 1975.

He later jumped to “The Price is Right,” where his 35-year tenure earned him a citation in the Guinness Book of World Records for his consecutive appearances hosting a game show. When adding his tenure on “Truth,” he served as a TV game show host for 51 years, winning 19 Emmy Awards in the process.

Barker’s wife, Dorothy Jo, died in 1981. The couple had no children, and he did not remarry.

L.A. Mayor Bass: Lack of Consequences for Crime Isn’t Causing Retail Theft, ‘Things Like This Happen’ if There’s Profit

On Friday’s broadcast of “The Issue Is,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that the issue of retail theft in the city has “nothing to do” with a lack of consequences for crime in the city and “things like this happen” when there are profits.

Bass said, “Well, you know what, things like this happen when there [are] profits to be made, and law enforcement put the task force together that I’m supportive of, and it has a number of different agencies, the city attorney, the district attorney, etc., all at the table. And I will tell you that, just the other day, they made eleven arrests. And so, these are crimes that are significants. They are felonies. They are not misdemeanors. And one of the things that we need to look at though, rest assured, they are not selling $10,000 purses in poor communities. They’re selling those purses online. They’re selling those stolen goods online. And so, I believe, when you have a crime like that, all of the actors are culpable and need to be dealt with. And so, we need to look at the online sales of stolen property, because that’s what it is.”

Host Elex Michaelson then asked, “There are a lot of viewers that feel like there aren’t enough consequences for crime in Los Angeles. What do you say to those people?”

Bass answered, “Well, they especially focus on that with these retail crime[s]. I think there [are] a lot of misunderstandings about that. These are felonies, and in some cases…these are crimes that do have major consequences. The reforms that people object to have nothing, nothing to do with these crimes.”

Study: Transgender Surgeries Tripled After Obama Forced Insurance Companies to Cover Expenses

The number of transgender surgeries nearly tripled in the U.S. starting in 2018 after the Obama administration forced health insurance companies to cover the costs and doctors and hospitals rushed in to reap the rewards of the expensive procedures, a study finds.

The “National Estimates of Gender-Affirming Surgery in the US” study by Columbia University published in August by JAMA finds that transgender-affirming surgeries soared from 4,550 in 2016 to 13,000 by 2019.

“Consistent with prior studies, we identified a remarkable increase in the number” of procedures, study author Dr. Jason Wright wrote.

“These findings suggest that the number of procedures performed in the US has increased dramatically, nearly tripling from 2016 to 2019,” Wright added.

The numbers then doubled twice more between 2000 and 2005 and from 2006 to 2011.

Wright said that the steep rise in the number of surgeries “is likely due in part to federal and state laws requiring coverage of transition-related care.”

The Obama administration first announced in 2014 an end to the 33-year ban on Medicare coverage of transgender care. Then, in 2018, Obamacare extended that policy and forced insurance companies to cover all trans surgeries.

The study also found that the number of patients seeking care for “gender identity disorder” rose from 12,855 in 2016 to 38,470 in 2020.

The study compiled data from two national surgery databases, and the authors looked at both in-patient and out-patient data.

More than half the patients were between the ages of 19 and 30, 22 percent were ages 31 to 40, and eight percent were among patients ages 12 to 18.

The majority of the younger patients, some 3,000 of them, were girls who had their breasts removed, the study found. The number of surgeries on genitals increased with older patients.

In addition, fifteen percent, representing 48,000 patients, appeared to indicate they suffered mental health or substance abuse problems.

The study did not look at suicide rates, but a PLOS ONE study from 2011 that researched transgender surgery patients in Sweden found that transgender patients were 4.9 times more likely to attempt suicide and 19.1 times more likely to die of suicide.

“Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population,” the study found. “Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group.”

Another recent report found that the U.S. is an outlier among Western nations in its headlong rush to push gender reassignment surgery and other dangerous medical procedures, especially on children, and that European countries — where many of the procedures originated — are beginning to pull back from blanket acceptance of transgender procedures.
