Perfectly safe
…for Marines'
The Ospreys will not carry Obama himself, but the presence of the new, green-painted birds in Marine Helicopter Squadron One is long-sought vindication for a program that took some 25 years to develop, was canceled twice and has claimed a number of lives along the way.
Today, the MV-22 has more than 160,000 safe operational flight hours, the Marine Corps says, and its arrival in HMX-1, as the squadron is known, means it’s time to leave behind the stigma that has long stuck to the aircraft.
Defense insiders are reacting predictably to news the Osprey aircraft was used for the first time over the weekend as part of the Marine presidential fleet to pick up administration aides and White House reporters for a quick ride in Massachusetts to Martha’s Vineyard, where the first family is vacationing for a week.
For manufacturers Bell Helicopter and Boeing, the flight was further evidence of what they’ve been saying all along: that the MV-22 would eventually prove itself a reliable and safe platform capable of flying farther and faster than its predecessors.
