2nd Full Moon for Aug is coming up. 8.30/31 depending on where you live.
August’sfirstfull moon was theCorn Moon, or Sturgeon Moon
All the full moons have names. Popular ones for the first full moon of August include Corn Moon and Sturgeon Moon. The name Sturgeon Moon recognizes the August peak of the sturgeon fish catch in the waters of North America’s Great Lakes. In addition, we’ve also heard the name Flying Up Moon for the August full moon.
The 2nd full supermoon on August 30-31
This will be closest full moon, and, therefore, the largest supermoonof the year. So not only does it appear to be the biggest full moon of the year, but it also appears to be the brightest. However, only truly experienced lunar observers will notice a supermoon appearing slightly bigger. But everyone can notice the supermoon appearing brighter (by 16%) than an average full moon.
If a month has two full moons, as this August does, the second one is called – by some people – a Blue Moon. So, this August has two supermoons with one of them being the Blue Moon.

Monarchy = Pieces on a Chess Board
A Royal Pursuit: Tracing the Connection Between Chess and Monarchy
Chess, often hailed as the “game of kings,” has a long-standing association with royalty. Throughout history, the strategic game of chess has captivated the minds of monarchs, becoming intertwined with their courts and symbolizing power, intellect, and noble pursuits. This blog post delves into the fascinating connection between chess and monarchy, exploring its origins, historical significance, and enduring legacy.
I. The Origins of Chess:
Chess traces its origins back over a millennium, emerging in ancient India as a game known as “chaturanga.” Originally designed to simulate the dynamics of an ancient Indian battlefield, the game depicted four divisions of the army — infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots — each with their own unique abilities. As chaturanga spread across the world, it transformed into the chess we know today, with kings, queens, knights, bishops, rooks, and pawns.
II. Chess and the Royal Courts:
As chess evolved and gained popularity, it found its way to the royal courts of medieval Europe. The game quickly became a favorite pastime of kings, queens, and nobles. Monarchs and aristocrats embraced chess for several reasons: it showcased strategic thinking, cultivated mental discipline, and provided entertainment that reflected their political and military endeavors. Chess sets were often exquisitely crafted, adorned with precious materials, and considered valuable symbols of wealth and status.
III. Symbolism and Power:
Chess’s connection to monarchy extends beyond its presence in the royal courts. The game’s symbolic representation of power is evident in the hierarchy of its pieces. The king, protected and revered, mirrors the central figure of a monarch. The queen, the most potent piece on the board, signifies the queen or consort who supports and advises the king. The bishops represent the clergy, the knights embody the cavalry and chivalry, and the rooks symbolize the castle’s fortifications.
IV. Historical References:
Chess has made its mark throughout history, leaving behind notable references to its association with monarchy. For instance, the famous Lewis Chessmen, discovered on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, are intricately carved chess pieces believed to date back to the 12th century. These artifacts provide a glimpse into the game’s medieval origins and its connection to the royal courts of the time.
V. Chess and Intellectual Pursuits:
Chess’s appeal to monarchs also lies in its intellectual challenges. The game demands logical thinking, foresight, and strategizing several moves ahead. For monarchs seeking to hone their mental acuity, chess became an intellectual pursuit. It served as a training ground to sharpen their decision-making skills, allowing them to anticipate political and military moves in the real world.
VI. Legacy and Influence:
The association between chess and monarchy persists to this day, with the game retaining its regal allure. Chess continues to be played in royal households, and numerous royal patrons support and participate in chess events and organizations worldwide. The game’s legacy as a symbol of strategic thinking and intellectual prowess endures, transcending the boundaries of time and geography.
Chess’s close relationship with monarchy spans centuries, intertwining with the royal courts and symbolizing power, intellect, and noble pursuits. From its ancient roots to its enduring presence in contemporary times, chess has served as a royal pursuit that transcends boundaries and captures the imagination of monarchs and enthusiasts alike. As the game evolves and adapts, its regal legacy remains an integral part of its enduring appeal.
