Kentucky and Texas School Districts Shut Down after ‘Surge’ of COVID Cases
The Lee County School District in Kentucky and Magoffin County Schools in Texas have shut down schools in response to a so-called “surge” in COVID-19 cases in the area. The said they cancelled classes due to “widespread illness” consistent with COVID and influenza. Authorities in Lee County claimed a surge of cases led to a drop in school attendance below the threshold needed to stay open, so they closed. Last week President Biden also announced he sent a proposal to Congress to sign off on more COVID vaccine funding.

Italy: Cheese Makers Are Putting Microchips in 90-pound Cheese Wheels to Combat Counterfeiters
Makers of Parmigiano-Reggiano in Italy are adding microchips to their cheese wheels to combat counterfeiters selling knock-offs of the premium products. Although the tiny micro-transponders made of silicon are reported to be edible, are placed on a food-safe casein label, and cannot be read remotely, critics are still concerned about tracking and safety in the case of ingestion. The microchips can be scanned to pull up a unique serial ID that buyers can use to ensure they’ve got the real thing.
Other industries are also considering or planning to use the chips, including makers of drugs and car parts.

Germany Hands Jail Sentence to Judge Who Ruled Against Government’s Mask Mandates
Judge Christian Dettmar struck down the order by German state Thuringia in 2021 that, as part of Coronavirus lockdown procedures, required children to wear masks at school, practice social distancing and use COVID tests. Judge Dettmar issued an order to stop the enforcement of COVID policies in two schools, but his ruling was overturned by a higher court, and masks were reestablished. He may lose his job as German law dictates any civil servant sentenced to a custodial sentence of more than 12 months is deprived of both their position and their pension. The case is being appealed.

Judge Rules Against Parental Right to Opt-Out of LGBTQ Material. Principal Accused of Sexual Harassment
Montgomery County, Maryland: A federal judge ruled against a group of parents, saying they have no fundamental right to opt their elementary school-aged children out of reading books in class with LGBTQ+ characters. The books may also contain sexually explicit material. Initially, parents could choose to opt their children out of reading and learning about the material, but the board for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) later stripped parents of this right and no longer warned parents when the controversial material would be introduced in class. Three families from different religious backgrounds sued the school system. Attorneys representing the parents have already filed a notice of appeal.
Dr. Joel Beidleman, a principal at a MCPS middle school, was promoted to principal of a high school, despite at least 18 reports by staff and teachers of sexual harassment and bullying that were submitted to the school district over the past seven years. The school system has hired a law firm to independently investigate the allegations and how he was able to advance to a job with a salary close to $200,000. He is on administrative leave.
