Burisma Group has gathered friends of Ukraine at the Forum in Monaco for the third time
The third Forum on Energy Security for the Future is an important event, and the level of guests demonstrates the subject's relevance, noted Prince Albert II of Monaco in his opening remarks
The third Forum on Energy Security for the Future took place in Monte Carlo. The guests have developed an informal name for this event, “The Friends of Ukraine Forum”. Most of the speakers considered Ukrainian vector in terms of ensuring the energy independence of Europe.
This is an important event, and the level of guests demonstrates the subject’s relevance, noted Prince Albert II of Monaco in his opening remarks. The Forum was also attended by the President of Latvia, Raimonds Vejonis; President of the Republic of Poland (1995-2005) Alexander Kwasniewski; former president of the European Commission and Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi; as well as former president of the European Council and Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Mirek Topolanek. Among the speakers and participants of the current Forum in Monte Carlo are American senators, European deputies, and diplomats from 20 countries. All of them spoke about Ukraine and the ways to resist the challenges from Russian side together.
“Economic relations, energy and politics in Europe are undergoing the most significant changes in their history after the Second World War. Russia’s policy is the most powerful destabilizing factor in Europe. We must find that unique single model of energy security, which would exclude any political or economic interference of the Russian Federation in the internal policy of European states. In Ukraine as well”, – noted Alexander Kwasniewski. According to the President of Poland (1995-2005), the current and future construction of Europe is already impossible without Ukraine.
Mirek Topolanek and Romano Prodi offered an initiative to create an energy alliance which would develop a unified position on Ukraine and North Stream-2. But according to John Herbst, director of the Director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, the alliance is unlikely to be launched.
“Germany is now forced to follow its own internal political processes. But possible sanctions which companies may face from the United States and other countries, will be a deterrent to the implementation of this project”, said Ambassador Herbst.
The issues of ecology were also raised at the Forum. In particular, the President of Latvia, Raymond Veyonis, stated that climate change is one of the greatest modern risks to geopolitical stability and security.
“In order to promote energy security and reduce the risks associated with it, Latvia and the Baltic States have promptly created opportunities for alternative energy supplies and competition in energy markets. Further measures to strengthen energy security will be connected with the usage of renewable energy sources, as well as domestic power supplies”, the President of Latvia stated.
