Zelensky backs ‘Israeli model’ for Ukraine

Kiev expects firm security guarantees from the US, the president has said

The US will provide long-term military aid to Kiev similar to the type of support that Washington extends to Israel, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has claimed. A potential leadership change in the White House would not affect that commitment, the Ukrainian leader insisted.

During an interview with the 1+1 TV channel on Sunday, Zelensky outlined the security guarantees that Ukraine is seeking from the US and its allies on its “path to NATO.” Leaders of the US-led military bloc failed to offer Ukraine a roadmap to membership at a summit in Lithuania last month, although G7 nations promised continued assistance.

“We will definitely have an Israeli model, the one which has weapons, technologies, training, funding, etc,” Zelensky said.

Israel has been the biggest recipient of US foreign military aid since World War II, although annual allocations for Ukraine have surpassed those offered to West Jerusalem since hostilities between Moscow and Kiev erupted last year.

Legal Concerns Halt NIH $154 Million "False Information" Program

Federal court case takes aim at Biden-Big Tech partnership

The National Institutes of Health halted a $154 million research program intended to study “equitable health communication” and combat alleged medical misinformation.

The “pause” came “in the context of the current regulatory and legal landscape around communication platforms,” according to a website for the initiative.

A spokeswoman for the NIH did not answer direct questions about the reason for the pause.

A federal court is considering a lawsuit brought by plaintiffs who allege the federal government colluded with Big Tech companies to silence their speech, often critical of COVID policies or the integrity of the 2020 presidential election.

“The project was still in concept phase and is being paused to reconsider its scope and aims in the context of the current regulatory and legal landscape around communication platforms, as noted on the website,” Emily Ritter told The College Fix via email. “Our overall assessment will determine the future direction of the concept in terms of if or how it will move forward.”

Discovery in the case, Missouri v. Biden, found federal officials communicated with Big Tech platforms and pressured them to remove content, including a parody Anthony Fauci Instagram account.

The Fix asked how the NIH ensures its programs do not violate the First Amendment and if Missouri v. Biden played a role in the decision to pull the program.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals allowed the federal government to continue to work with Big Tech while the lawsuit continues.

The initiative appears to have come from comments made by departing NIH Director Francis Collins in 2021.

“We basically have seen the accurate medical information overtaken, all too often, by the inaccurate conspiracies and false information on social media. It’s a whole other world out there,” Collins said.

“The concept envisioned the development, testing, and sharing of new approaches for effective and equitable health communication,” the NIH website stated. “Planning for the concept was informed by input from a request for information in April 2022 and a workshop held in May 2022.”

Watch: Romney Calls Bottomless Ukraine Aid "The Best National Defense Spending We've Ever Done"

Republican Senator Mitt Romney gave a big shout out to the Biden Administration Friday, posting a video in which he claims that sending billions in taxpayer dollars to Ukraine is “the best national defense spending I think we’ve ever done.”

While the economy at home is dismal, Romney claimed that a “very small amount” of money that the U.S. is sending to Ukraine, more than $200 billion and counting, is benefitting all Americans.

“The single most important thing we can do to strengthen ourselves relative to China is to see Russia defeated in Ukraine. Because they are allies, and Russia being weakened weakens their ally, China,” Romney said.

“Being able to take an amount which equals what about 5 percent of our military budget, but actually less than 5 percent of our military budget each year to help the Ukrainians, is about about the best national defense spending I think we’ve ever done,” Romney claimed.

He added “We’re losing no lives in Ukraine,” while not mentioning the hundreds of thousands of dead Ukrainians.

He continued, “the Ukrainians are fighting heroically against Russia that has 1,5000 nuclear weapons aimed at us. It’s like, so, we’re diminishing and devastating the Russian military for a very small amount of money relative to what we spend on the rest of defense.”

“It is very much in America’s national interest in our national interest to help Ukraine. And the best thing we can do for America is to see people who have nuclear weapons and that is getting weaker,” Romney concluded.

Residents of the devastated Lahaina inMaui sure don’t think that sending money to Ukraine is the best form of national defense spending:

Silicon Valley titans behind mystery $1B land buy near California military base: reports

The mystery buyers of nearly $1 billion of undeveloped land abutting a California military base were revealed to be Silicon Valley heavyweights — and not a network of Chinese spies as some lawmakers feared.

The land grab near Travis Air Force Base by Flannery Associates — which has become the largest landowner in Solano County, about 60 miles northeast of San Francisco — had prompted concern that a foreign entity could be using the investment to harm US national security.

However, it turns out Flannery’s backers are a who’s who list of tech titans and investors that includes LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Emerson Collective philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, according to the New York Times.

The deep-pocketed investors reportedly plan to turn the land into their vision of an ideal city, featuring sustainable energy and a pedestrian-friendly layout.

Aside from Hoffman and Powell Jobs, Flannery’s investors reportedly include Marc Andreessen of the private venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, former Sequoia Capital partner Michael Moritz and Stripe co-founders Patrick and John Collison, as well as entrepreneurs Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross.

“We are proud to partner on a project that aims to deliver good-paying jobs, affordable housing, clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, open space and a healthy environment to residents of Solano County,” Flannery spokesperson Brian Brokaw said in a statement obtained by the Wall Street Journal.

“We are excited to start working with residents and elected officials, as well as with Travis Air Force Base, on making that happen,” Brokaw added.

The Post has reached out to Brokaw and several of the reported investors for comment.

The group is said to be led by Jan Sramek, a 36-year-old former Goldman Sachs trader who has spent the last few years securing funds from Silicon Valley luminaries for the project. It’s unclear how much each investor has contributed to Flannery.

In total, the group has spent more than $800 million to acquire thousands of acres of land in the region, according to the New York Times.

In a 2017 email to a prospective investor obtained by the Times, Moritz stated that “this effort should relieve some of the Silicon Valley pressures we all feel — rising home prices, homelessness, congestion etc.”

Flannery’s recent buying spree has generated growing unease among nearby residents as well as the federal government, which had launched a probe in July into the land purchases.

In recent days, local residents in Solano County had reportedly been bombarded with surveys via text messages. The surveys asked for their thoughts on a planned city with “tens of thousands of new homes” as well as features such as orchards and a solar energy farm, according to the Journal, which obtained screenshots of the texts.

Meanwhile, Flannery recently filed a lawsuit in May against a group of local landowners, alleging that they colluded in a price-fixing scheme to drive up the cost of their properties. Lawyers for the landowners reportedly denied wrongdoing.

Data breach at French govt agency exposes info of 10 million people

Pôle emploi, France's governmental unemployment registration and financial aid agency, is informing of a data breach that exposed data belonging to 10 million individuals.

"Pôle emploi became aware of the violation of the information system of one of its providers involving a risk of disclosure of personal data of job seekers," reads the press release.

"Job seekers registered in February 2022, and former users of the job center are potentially affected by this theft of personal data."

Although the agency does not specify the number of impacted individuals, Le Parisien reports an estimate of 10 million people to be impacted.

This is based on the fact that 6 million people had registered in one of Pôle emploi's 900 job centers by February 2022, and another 4 million had done so in the previous 12 months prior to the attack, but their data hadn't been deleted from the agency's systems yet.

Financial aid programs unaffected

The exposed information includes full names and social security numbers, while email addresses, phone numbers, passwords, and banking data have not been affected by this data leak.

Although the exposed data has limited utility in cybercrime operations, Pôle emploi advises registered job seekers to be cautious with incoming communications.

Also, a dedicated phone support line has been set up by the agency to address any questions and concerns that exposed individuals may have about the incident.

Pôle emploi says that all its teams are now engaged in securing the data of job seekers and will continue to implement additional protection measures and procedures to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring in the future.

The agency has clarified that the incident does not impact its financial aid programs, and job seekers should feel confident to access the online employment portal at "pole-employment.fr" using their passwords.

MOVEit breach

As for the service provider responsible for the data leak, security firm Emsisoft listed Pôle emploi in its MOVEit page. The cybersecurity company also confirmed that 10 million people were impacted.

However, the Clop ransomware gang that carried out the massive MOVEit hacking spree has not yet published the French agency on its extortion site.

Previously, the threat actors said they would not expose information obtained from breaches in government agencies, so it's unclear if the omission is due to this tactic.

Pôle emploi stands second in terms of the number of impacted individuals, only behind Maximus' 11 million exposure, while the total tally of the MOVEit attack campaign has reached 59.2 million compromised individuals and 988 organizations.

Former NY consul general Zamir joins Tel Aviv Mayor Huldai to run for city hall

Ex-tourism minister announces return to local politics after quitting envoy job due to judicial overhaul, 1 election cycle after losing challenge against longtime incumbent in 2018

Former Israeli consul general to New York Asaf Zamir signaled his entry into Tel Aviv’s mayoral race on Monday, announcing a joint run with incumbent Ron Huldai.

If successful in the October 31 ballot, Huldai would be mayor and Zamir his deputy. Zamir has previously filled the deputy slot for five-term mayor Huldai, before unsuccessfully challenging him for the job in 2018.

“There’s a lot to do in the city and a lot of challenges stand before us,” Zamir wrote in a Facebook post announcing his run. “I firmly believe that together we can continue to move the city forward and protect it as Israel’s liberal beacon, illuminating the darkness and signaling the correct way forward.”
