Former BBC boss to take charge of CNN ahead of US election
The former director general of the BBC is being lined up to take charge at CNN ahead of next year’s presidential election as the network grapples with collapsing ratings.
Mark Thompson, who led the British broadcaster between 2004 and 2012, is widely expected to be appointed chief executive of the cable channel later on Wednesday after its previous boss was fired just 16 months into the job.
Mr Thompson, 66, faces a challenge in rebuilding a newsroom that has been gutted by layoffs following cutbacks under owners Warner Bros. Discovery. The US media giant is attempting to right-size its $50bn (£39.5bn) debt pile following last year’s merger between Warner Media and Discovery.
