From what I understand, he always maintained his innocence. He plead guilty to avoid incarceration because that's the offer he was given, 90 days house arrest and 5 years probation, and that's because it was such a weak case. He was then sued by the family and a jury sided with him. So while I don't know what the truth is in that case, that's probably not the best example.
