The basic design behind catholic and related high churches is simply that the priest reads from the bible to the attendees. They do not read the bible themselves, and spend a lot of time on ceremony, so the priest is free to take liberties. This extends as well to the education of the priests, who barely read maybe 15 minutes of the bible per week. They aren't taught about how salvation works and waste time on church ceremony and procedures that aren't mandated in the bible. It is likely that you don't have church staff walking about before and after service talking to them, much less making any kind of effort at salvation. Perhaps the worst kind are churches which offer a rock band style service where they simply play christian rock without making any kind of attempt at a biblical lesson.
