Hillshire Brands issues urgent recall of 15,000lbs of sausage products due to possible bone fragment contamination - after at least one person was injured by the issue

UPDATED: 16:01 EDT, 4 September 2023

  • Over 15,000lbs of blended meat may have been contaminated by bones

  • Customers are urged not to eat sausages with the Nov 11, 2023 use-by-date

  • At least one person has suffered an oral injury due to the issue

Hillshire Brands has issued an urgent recall of its smoked sausage products after bone fragments caused injuries to at least one person.

The company has urged customers not to eat their ready-to-eat sausages with a use-by-date of November 11, 2023, as it recalls almost 16,000lbs of blended meat.

The recall was announced by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) after customers complained about finding bone fragments in the sausages.

It is unclear how the production of the sausages became contaminated by bones, which has led to one report of a person suffering an oral injury, according to the FDA.

The recall is targeted only to the brand's 14oz packages of ready-to-eat sausages titled: 'Hillshire Farm Smokes Sausage Made With Pork, Turkey and Beef.'

Food safety officials told people to look for the contaminated batch produced on June 14, 2023, which are marked with codes listed in order of establishment number, line number and time of production hours: minutes, seconds.

The sausages' packaging will be stamped: 'EST. 756A 20 19:00:00 through 21:59:59 and EST. 756A 21 19:00:00 through 21:59:59' and use by date of 'Nov 11 23.'

Officials have not confirmed how many complaints have been made, which were sent to both the FDA and the FSIS.

The FSIS added that it is concerned that unwitting customers could have the bone-filled sausages in their freezers for some time as they urged people to check for the products.

Customers are able to return the sausages to the place of purchase.

The recall comes just days after frozen vegetables packaged by Twin City Foods were called back over fears the products could be contaminated with bacteria.

The FDA warned that customers who ingest any one of 22 frozen vegetable products made by the company are at risk of serious health problems, including miscarriages in pregnant women.

Food safety officials said the company is 'voluntarily recalling a limited quantity' of the products because there is a 'potential for these products to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes'.

It is the same bacteria that recently killed three people in Washington after they ate milkshakes made using a contaminated ice cream machine at a burger joint.

The affected foods include various sizes of Kroger and Food Lion branded super sweet corn, Kroger and Food Lion branded mixed vegetables carrots, super sweet corn, green beans and green peas. The full list can be found on the FDA's website.
