What senators' early votes say about Paxton’s fate

After the pretrial votes this morning, the impeachment trial’s final outcome remains firmly in doubt — a rarity in the upper chamber, where there’s usually little suspense about how votes will shake out.

To keep his job, Paxton needs just 10 senators to vote in his favor. The attorney general saw a smattering of support from the chamber’s 19 GOP senators across more than dozen votes on his team’s pretrial motions (most of them to dismiss charges altogether). The votes serve as the first real sign of how senators may vote on the question of Paxton’s conviction or acquittal.

There were six Republican senators who voted for all of Paxton’s dismissal motions: Paul Bettencourt, Donna Campbell, Brandon Creighton, Bob Hall, Lois Kolkhorst and Tan Parker.

Meanwhile, seven sided against Paxton on each motion: Pete Flores, Kelly Hancock, Joan Huffman, Phil King, Mayes Middleton, Robert Nichols and Drew Springer.

If those two groups vote along the same lines when deciding whether to remove Paxton, then the outcome would come down to a final group of five GOP senators who cast a mix of pro- and anti-dismissal votes: Brian Birdwell, Bryan Hughes, Charles Perry, Charles Schwertner and Kevin Sparks.

Senate Republicans usually vote in lockstep under Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who oversees the 31-seat chamber.
