Every available poll shows that Trudeau is now a massive liability to his party's electoral future
There’s very little good news in the polls for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau anymore. Conservative fortunes are so far out in front that pollsters are now projecting that the next election is likely to result in a Tory majority.
A throughline in all these results is the novel realization that Trudeau – whose personal popularity was once considered a secret weapon for Liberal electability — may suddenly be a liability to his party’s future.
A recent Abacus Data poll found that 56 per cent of Canadians thought Trudeau should step down and allow a new Liberal leader to take his place. In June, another Abacus survey found that an incredible 81 per cent of respondents wanted “a change in government.”
In the world’s other Westminster democracies, this is usually the point where a leader either resigns voluntarily or is forced out by a caucus desperate to retain their party’s hold on power.
That’s sort of what happened in New Zealand in January, when then-prime minister Jacinda Ardern resigned in the wake of plummeting support for her New Zealand Labour Party. Her replacement, Chris Hipkins, was indeed able to recover a bit of ground, although Labour is still on course for defeat in an October general election….
