Ukraine ‘has never been closer’ to NATO membership – Stoltenberg (bullshit)
Kiev was denied a roadmap to accession to the US-led military bloc during a summit in Lithuania in July
Ukraine is closer than ever to joining NATO, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has claimed, adding that Russia “cannot veto”Kiev’s future membership.
The NATO chief made the comments on Thursday at the European Parliament, where he briefed MEPs on cooperation between the US-led military bloc and the EU. Stoltenberg insisted that the two sides “share the same values [and] the same challenges.”
Part of his address was dedicated to what NATO offered Ukraine at a recent summit in Lithuania. Kiev was not provided the roadmap to membership that it had requested, but was promised more military aid, representation through a newly created council, and an opportunity to skip a step that NATO candidates typically have to pass.
“And these three things, the interoperability, the NATO-Ukraine Council and removal of the requirement for Membership Action Plan for Ukraine, demonstrate that Ukraine has never been closer to a membership in NATO than now,” Stoltenberg declared.
US President Joe Biden said ahead of the July summit that Ukraine would have to meet certain conditions before its bid was accepted. NATO member states have also ruled out Ukraine joining before the conflict with Russia is resolved.
After the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev, Ukraine declared membership of the EU and NATO as its foreign policy priorities, enshrining these aspirations in its constitution.
That stance helped fuel tensions with Russia, which considers NATO a hostile organization and has for decades objected to its expansion in Europe. The bloc first promised that Ukraine would eventually become a member during a 2008 summit in Bucharest.
Russia has requested that Ukraine be a neutral nation that does not host foreign military forces. In 2021, Moscow attempted to negotiate a security arrangement that would have addressed its concerns, calling on NATO to withdraw its military infrastructure from the Russian border and cease its expansion. The proposal, however, was rejected.
Russian President Vladimir Putin cited NATO’s involvement in Ukraine as among the key reasons when Moscow began its military operation against Kiev last year.
Speaking to MEPs, Stoltenberg reiterated NATO’s position that “Russia cannot veto membership for any sovereign independent state in Europe.” (Are they are a sovereign state since they are still a protectorate of Russia?)

Smugglers caught supplying weapons parts to Ukraine – FSB
The group was allegedly helping Kiev repair its combat helicopters and planes using Russian components
Russia’s FSB security service announced on Thursday that it had intercepted a ring of smugglers who funneledmilitary-gradespare parts to foreign nations, including components to repair Ukrainian aircraft.
The suspects allegedly obtained parts from combat helicopters and planes in Russia, and illegally transported them out of the country, the FSB said. The group included individuals born in Ukraine and an unnamed Central Asian nation, according to the agency.
The security service published footage of the sting operation and arrest of two men. One of them was shown with his hands covered in ink, often used to mark bait money, glowing in ultraviolet light.
The video also demonstrated a row of crates and bags, presumably containing goods prepared for smuggling, as well as various pieces of equipment and a large sum of money in rubles.
The press release said the FSB had seized more than 100 military parts, along with $117,000 and €59,000 ($63,000) in cash.
Under Russian law, the suspects face up to 12 years in prison on smuggling charges. A Moscow court has ordered they be kept in pre-trial detention, the FSB said.

Moscow responds to Pentagon sending uranium ammo to Kiev
Washington will have to answer for the consequences of using such munitions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warns
The Pentagon’s delivery of depleted uranium (DU) projectiles to Ukraine will have dire consequences for future generations, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said. His comments came after Washington announced the delivery of an unspecified number of 120mm DU rounds to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package.
“This is very bad news,” Peskov explained during a press conference on Thursday, noting that the use of such munitions in Yugoslavia in the past has led to “galloping” increases in the number of people suffering from cancer and other diseases, which has been confirmed by international organizations.
“The consequences become noticeable in subsequent generations,” the spokesperson stated, adding that “the same situation will inevitably occur in Ukrainian territories where [DU munitions] will be used.”
Peskov insisted that all of the responsibility would lie entirely with US leaders who made the decision to supply Kiev’s forces with such munitions.
Prior to announcing the delivery of the controversial rounds on Wednesday, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh claimed that these rounds were “standard use”in American tanks and that Washington had “absolute confidence that the Ukrainians will use them responsibly.”
Earlier this year, the UK also sent Kiev a shipment of DU shells to be used with its Challenger 2 tanks, sparking outrage in Moscow. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the time that such deliveries would be “taking this escalation to a new and very serious stage.” Russia’s embassy in London also accused the West of being willing toturn Ukraine into “not only an anti-Russian military shooting range, but also a radioactive landfill.”
The deliveries of DU rounds to Ukraine have also been met with condemnation from the United Nations, which has repeatedly objected to the use of such munitions anywhere in the world, but this warning has had no effect on the deliveries.
Meanwhile, both London and Washington have repeatedly rejected all concerns about the potential consequences of using these toxic rounds and have dismissed reports stating that the use of such munitions has led to increase in cancer and birth defects in places like Iraq and Serbia.
