Kiev’s new defense chief investigated for abuse of power – media

Ukraine’s anti-corruption court reportedly ordered launch of a criminal case against Rustem Umerov and his now-former deputies

Ukraine’s newly-appointed Defense Minister Rustem Umerov is under investigation by the nation’s anti-corruption bureau for alleged crimes in his previous position, according to local media.

In late August, the High Anti-Corruption Court (VAKS) reportedly ordered the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) to look into complaints against Umerov and two of his now-former deputies in the State Property Fund (FGIU), the agency that he led before taking over the military portfolio earlier this week.

The news was broken on Wednesday by outlet Comments.ua, which claimed to be in possession of a copy of the court ruling. FGIU leadership figures were accused of abusing their power in dealing with Tsentrenergo, Ukraine’s only state-owned electricity-generating company.

The complaint claimed that three officials had covered up Tsentrenergo’s sale of electricity below market price and obstructed a proposed investigation into embezzlement, the Comments.ua report said.

VAKS, which has jurisdiction over corruption cases in Ukraine when alleged damage surpasses a certain threshold, told the anti-corruption bureau that the complaint warrants an investigation, according to quotes from the ruling.

A related story was reported on Monday by news outlet Ukrainski Novini. It said the national police was investigating FGIU over its decision last month to sack independent members of the Tsentrenergo supervisory board.

A court in Kiev has ruled that the state fund acted unlawfully when it dismissed the two observers. The controversy with the board was reportedly mentioned in the complaint, which VAKS cited in its decision to investigate Umerov and his subordinates.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, according to a summary of the development offered by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, has “fired one defense minister over corruption but would not launch an investigation and instead appointed another minister, who is being investigated for corruption.”

The Ukrainian parliament appointed Umerov at Zelensky’s request on Wednesday in a landslide vote. The president announced the replacement of Aleksey Reznikov, the previous minister, last Sunday, stating that the department required “new approaches.”

Kremlin warns US over plan to hand Russian assets to Ukraine

Washington has pledged to provide Kiev with $5.4 million in frozen funds

Moscow considers the blocking, seizure or retention of its state assets and reserves, as well as those of its citizens, to be illegal, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday.

He was responding to a question during a press briefing about a promise by the US to transfer frozen Russian funds to Ukraine.

Any attempts to use funds blocked by the US and its European allies will eventually lead to legal action, Peskov warned, adding that “none of the cases of such illegal retention will be left without attention.”

“Claims that they have managed to find legitimate grounds for the continuation of this illegality are nonsense,” he declared.

The remarks came after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who arrived in Ukraine on Wednesday, announced plans to provide Kiev with $5.4 million in assets seized from sanctioned Russian businessmen. The funds are part of a new $1 billion support package and will be directed to aid Ukrainian veterans of the military conflict, according to the US official.

“For the first time, we are transferring to Ukraine assets seized from sanctioned Russian oligarchs, which will now be used to support Ukrainian military veterans. Those who have enabled Putin’s war of aggression should pay for it,” Blinken stated at a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba.

The US has reportedly provided Ukraine with more than $43 billion in aid since the outbreak of hostilities in February 2022.

For some time, Washington has been investigating ways to use frozen Russian assets to cover the cost of reconstruction in Ukraine after the conflict. TheUS Justice Departmenthas launched adedicated unit called KleptoCaptureto help enforce sanctions on Russian government officials and businessmen, targeting their yachts, jets, real estate, and other assets.

Meanwhile, Peskov noted that lawsuits over immobilized Russian funds were already underway in many countries with some entrepreneurs achieving success “including in appealing against illegal actions of an investigative nature and illegal searches conducted against them.”

Moscow has repeatedly called Western attempts to confiscate frozen Russian assets as “barbarism” and “theft”, threatening to respond in kind, if necessary.

President Trump Takes Commanding 50 Point Primary Lead at 62% – Gains Largest Polling Lead Against Biden 42/37

Premise Polling conducted by 538 Project [DATA HERE] shows President Donald Trump with a commanding 50-point lead over the rest of the field. President Trump holds 62% of primary voters, while Ron DeSantis shrinks even further to 12%. This poll, along with all the state polls show a similar trend pattern. President would win all the delegates in the key primary states.

In a head-to-head matchup with only Trump and DeSantis, President Trump crushes the Florida Governor 67% to 24%. The demographics are again consistent with Trump dominating every subset of voter and DeSantis holding tepid support from rich white men over 55, with graduate degrees who say they don’t follow politics.

This poll reflects an almost identical outcome to the Wall Street Journal polling released a few days ago.

Additionally, in this poll President Trump is easily beating Joe Biden 42/37, while Joe Biden beats Ron DeSantis 35/33.

There are too many aligned datapoints now showing almost identical outcomes. This reality is likely why DeSantis PAC senior official Jeff Roe recently said the next 30 to 60 days were do or die for the DeSantis operation. They are simply running out of money.

Fulton County Lawfare Madness on Full Display – Courtroom Video

As long as you remember that Lawfare is the legal construction of a media narrative intended to sway public opinion, then the madness happening in Fulton County, GA, reconciles. [At the bottom of this outline is video from the courtroom]

Earlier today, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee said it seems unrealistic to expect all of the pre-trial issues to be resolved before the established trial date of October 23rd for Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro. Both Powell and Chesebro have demanded speedy trials; however, the case is essentially a Rico conspiracy case and none of the accused defendants can split away from the group of 19 as a whole.

If a single state defendant successfully argues in another court that their case should be transferred to a different jurisdiction (perhaps federal), orif a single state defendant is successful splitting away from the group of 19, then the entire conspiracy case collapses. This is the ridiculousness of the construct.

Today, lawyers for both Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro reminded the judge they do not know each other, have never met each other, and have no idea what connection is being applied to them as they are being accused of conspiring together. It would be hard to imagine a conspiracy between two people who have never met, never communicated and don’t know each other; alas this is the madness in Fulton County.

As noted by Politico, “Prosecutors said the distinction in the charges Powell and Chesebro face is immaterial since they’re both charged with conspiring toward the same unlawful goal: keeping Trump in power despite his defeat in the 2020 election.” So, wanting Trump to remain in office is the connection that creates the conspiracy.

According to the Lawfare logic as explained today in court, any of the 73 million Trump voters are therefore guilty of conspiring to keep President Donald Trump in office, and subject to future arrest and detention. Yes, this is Lawfare madness.

Even Judge McAfee seemed to admit the madness before him when he said, “it could potentially even be a six-month turnaround just for the 11th Circuit to come up with a decision,” referring to the Atlanta-based federal appeals court that would handle appeals from individuals claiming the state has no jurisdiction.

“Where does that leave us in the middle of a jury trial?” the judge asked, althoughhe also seemed to concur that Powell and Chesebro have a right under Georgia law to have their trials start next month as they have demanded. [link]
