COVID-19 "new variant" cases rising while updated boosters show promise but unavailable for now

COVID-19 variants including EG.5 and FL.1.5.1 are spreading across the United States and the number of COVID-related hospitalizations has increased. Experts are unsure of whether the variants are more contagious than in the past, or present more serious symptoms.

COVID-19 cases are rising but an approved new booster remains unavailable to the general public.

COVID-19 variants including EG.5 and FL.1.5.1 are spreading across the United States and COVID-related hospitalizations are up nearly 16% since August 20, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

One of the most high-profile recent cases of COVID-19 was when First Lady Jill Biden, who reportedly received the original vaccine and two boosters, tested positive this week. President Biden has reportedly tested negative. The First Lady's Communications Director Elizabeth Alexander issued a statement saying that "she is currently experiencing only mild symptoms."

Michelle Barron, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at the University of Colorado School of Medicine said that there's "no evidence yet to suggest that this variant is more infectious or causes worse symptoms."

“It’s like all the variants of interest and concern. We need to keep an eye on it. But we don’t know how it will impact us yet, if at all," she said.

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said that their "Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine has not been approved or licensed by the FDA, but has been authorized for emergency use by the FDA." On the heels of a positive review on August 30 by the European Medicines Agency, Pfizer said that "following a decision from the European Commission, the updated vaccine will be ready to ship to applicable EU member states immediately."

Moderna issued a press release yesterday saying that "Clinical trial data from a research assay confirmed Moderna's updated COVID-19 vaccine showed an 8.7 to 11-fold increase in neutralizing antibodies against COVID-19." The pharmaceutical company added that "Moderna has shared this data with regulators and is ready to supply its updated COVID-19 vaccine pending regulatory approval."

According to the CDC, these and other new COVID-19 vaccines are expected to be approved and available in the U.S. at some point in the fall.

"On June 15, 2023, an FDA advisory committee met to talk about COVID-19 vaccines and additional strains of the COVID-19 virus," read a CDC webpage. "They recommended that COVID-19 vaccines should be updated to provide protection against the Omicron variant XBB.1.5 for use by the fall of 2023."

New COVID-19 booster shots will likely be available in mid-September, a spokesperson for the CDC told Just the News on Wednesday.

Federal prosecutors admit errors, ‘serious issues’ in ‘Fat Leonard’ trial of former naval officers

Nearly 10 years to the day since federal prosecutors filed the first charges in what would come to be known as the “Fat Leonard” scandal and grow into the largest bribery and corruption case in U.S. Navy history, an assistant U.S. attorney on Wednesday admitted to “serious issues” with prosecutorial misconduct.

The remarkable admission came during a sentencing hearing for four former Navy officers who were convicted of several felonies during a trial last year. But those convictions were vacated Wednesday, and the defendants resolved their cases instead by pleading guilty to one misdemeanor each. They were given sentences that included no prison, probation or restitution — just a $100 fine.

U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino said the misconduct by prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego “can only be described as outrageous.”

She said defense attorneys for the four former officers have spent more than a year challenging their clients’ convictions and uncovering misdeeds by prosecutors, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office never responded.

“The only reasonable inference is that the allegations cannot and will not be justified or ever defended by the government,” Sammartino said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Ko, who was brought onto the case after last year’s trial, said that while his office did not agree with every allegation of misconduct, it did acknowledge some of them were true. He did not specify which his office agreed with and which it did not.

“There were pretty obviously serious issues that affect our ability to go forward” defending the convictions or seeking a new trial, Ko told the judge. Seated next to him as he addressed the judge was Andrew Haden, acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California.

The four officers — former Capts. David Newland, James Dolan and David Lausman and former Cmdr. Mario Herrera — were each convicted of several felonies last year following the only trial that resulted from the sprawling web of criminal cases connected to military contractor Leonard Glenn Francis and his company, Glenn Defense Marine Asia, or GDMA.

But in the 14 months since the trial ended, their attorneys argued that a “dizzying array of government misconduct” prevented the former officers from getting a fair trial. For more than a year the defendants sought either a new trial or a complete dismissal of the case.

On Wednesday, Ko asked Sammartino to vacate the trial convictions and accept a plea package. The judge signed off on the agreement. Each of the men was arraigned on misdemeanor charges. Each pleaded guilty and was sentenced to pay the fine.

Western countries hatching Interpol plot against Moscow – official

‘Unfriendly’ nations are trying to expel Russia from the international police cooperation body, its head of the national bureau has said

Some Interpol members have been plotting to remove Russia from the international police cooperation body for political reasons, the head of Russia’s National Central Bureau of Interpol, Major General of the Police Valery Kalachev, told TASS on Thursday.

When Moscow launched its military campaign in Ukraine, a “group of nations” started to plan its exclusion, the general claimed, adding that this procedure is not even envisioned by the organization’s charter. “We are aware that some behind-the-scenes debates are still continuing in several unfriendly nations,” he said, adding that these actions go against Interpol’s rules.

“Interpol is a … purely professional police organization,” Kalachev explained, adding that Article 3 of its charter “strictly prohibits [it] from interfering in or engaging in any activities of a political, military, religious or racial nature.”

So far, Moscow has successfully resisted any pressure within the organization and managed to “keep a high level of cooperation with its foreign partners,” the general assured. Kalachev admitted, however, that the EU was increasingly reluctant to work with Russia in this regard since the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

“EU nations refused to hand over a total of around 100 criminals in 2022 and 2023,” he revealed, adding that Poland is the least cooperative nation in this regard, as it alone turned down ten requests by the Russian Interpol bureau.

The general believes that such actions are primarily detrimental to the security and wellbeing of the EU nations themselves. “In defiance of common sense, they let our criminals stay on their [territory], putting their citizens at risk and placing an additional burden on their law enforcement agencies,” Kalachev said. The “short-sighted” political course of the elites in these nations “hurts their citizens’ interests, including economic and property ones,” he added.

Russia is actively cooperating with Interpol in fighting terrorism, organized crime, and drug trafficking, the head of the national bureau declared, and the organization sometimes remains the “only information sharing channel” for national law enforcement agencies amid the “difficult foreign policy situation.”

Moscow makes use of Interpol’s special notifications system to warn foreign law enforcement agencies in other countries about potentially dangerous individuals that might arrive while involved in terrorist activities.

Speaking on the 100th anniversary of the organization’s creation, Kalachev also called on the international police community to engage in “constructive” international dialogue and jointly combat threats ranging from terrorism to cybercrime.
