>Portside and starboard refer to the left and right sides of a ship, not the observer.1 When facing the bow or front of the vessel, portside always refers to the left side, while starboard is the right.2 When facing the opposite way towards the stern of the ship, portside will be right and starboard will be left. To determine whether you are on the portside the left of the ship, work out which is the rear of the ship (stern) or the front of the ship (bow). Port and starboard are fixed locations on a vessel, unlike left and right.1 It is important to know your port from your starboard.0
