Depends on the tobacco and how it is processed. Most mass produced tobacco comes with toxic additives to make it "taste better" and last longer, although not needed if you have a decent home humidifier. I'm growing my own tobacco to cure it and process it, to be smoked in my pipe. My first run with it this year. Crops are half way grown although they will be kept alive with heat lamps in the greenhouse near harvest time. Pain in the ass this year because I didn't plan the time right.

Yep, I only smoke tobacco on occasion, typically a puff on my pipe twice a week, only at night. Otherwise it can cause undesirable health effects, like being more susceptible to the cold or flu. Roll your own tobacco used to be very good quality, until the government taxed it into oblivion, which most independent companies lost consumers and sold out to bigger companies and consolidated the industry/markets. Otherwise organic quality roll-your-own is expensive AF today and harder to find.
